Charlatan Chump Chad
Born 1973, M, from Ocoee, Florida, United StatesChad, far less than wise beyond his years, he was twenty-six going on six and a half. Residing with his younger brother, step mother and father, rent and care free. No children to speak of, still a child himself, doing childish things, behaving irresponsibly and with no thought of consequences. Living for the moment as if tomorrow would never come was young Chad, never saving for a rainy day. Chad loved the party and the party loved Chad, he could be funny, cool. Living for the party can sometimes come with consequences, DUI charges, weird seizures. Chad drank himself out of a driver's license and car. He worked daily and made great money for a guy with few bills but somehow he could never come up with the $1,500.00 to pay his fines. Chad bummed rides from work to the bars and favorite watering holes where he could wet his whistle with fire water. Inebriated, Chad would be, staggering into his father's house, passing out in his childhood bed.
Two hours later it would happen again, uncontrollable violent shaking of his long, slender frame. Clenching his pillow, he writhed in great pain to his younger brother's despair. The family gathered around him, trying to comfort him through his latest ordeal. 911 would not be dialed as these seizures were unfortunately becoming common place, yet Chad failed to modify his behavior. The family had been to the hospital with him before and the results were always the same, a large bill and sound advice that Chad would fail to follow. Sober somewhat during his recovery Chad would be, no alcohol but other substances would be consumed. There were many different ways to party and Chad loved them all. Stoned, singing the lyrics to a bad rap song he stared into the screen of his phone at chicks on social media. He likened himself to rapper MGK because they were built the same and looked similar. Chad wanted to party and live like a rock star without understanding that many of them make for good looking corpses, because they died young.
Chad and younger brother Jamie worked in the restaurant business, Jamie in the back of the house, Chad served and cooked. He got paid in tips nightly when he served and received a paycheck weekly, unfortunately most of that money slipped through his hands like grains of sand.
In the workplace he often tries to assert his authority but he has none. Questioning, examining and criticizing co-workers, holding them to a higher standard than he held himself to did Chad. He always wanted to be seen as the one who did things the right way, but would cut a corner quicker than anyone else. Highlighting the short comings of others helped him to feel elevated and superior, raising his lacking image of self. His comments sometimes brought him conflict and verbal altercations but still, he just couldn't help himself. He had to be the guy to call people out, often times unjustly.
Out at night with the girls sometimes Chad would offer to buy rounds of drinks for everyone, big shot. A sky high tab would be run up which Chad would run out on. Shameful, working in that hospitality industry and not offering adequate gratuity is frowned upon. To run up and out on a tab is considered despicable because you fully understand their plight. The job can be tough, dependent on people's kindness and respect for your service.
Chad played other games at the bars as well, allowing his underage brother to use his identification to purchase alcohol. They had been cut off from service and asked to leave an establishment, harming the reputations of their coworkers who frequented the bar. Guilt by association.
At night sometimes Chad sits alone feeling empty inside, ate up. His life holds little purpose. He worked hard, but wasn't getting anywhere, he could get a girl, but no girl loved him. Then there were those damn seizures. Chad was in an ideal situation but couldn't take advantage of it. He failed to realize, the energy he puts out into the world comes back to him. The man who gives freely, grows richer while Chad withholds what he should give and only suffers want.
Chad's not a bad guy, he's just a knucklehead, men often mature slowly when coddled. For now Chad is a Charlatan Chump sharing in untruth to obtain the things he believes make him happy yet are hampering his growth and development. Chad will get there one day, become the man he was destined to be, it'll probably take a good woman. I hope he finds her soon or he may become like the rock stars he admires, consumed by the party.

06/08/2023Appreciate your kind words Valerie and it is so sad how many young men I know like Chad. We men usually take a little longer to learn lessons of life and love.

06/03/2023Cam,
The "chads" of the world will never relate to your story. Sadly, everyone who knows one (and everyone does, just check the thread below!) will relate to your story. I am glad that you think some day he will grow up. In my life, I have seen that happen, but rarely.
When I was young, I was filled with potential...but had no Mentors, and no way of understanding how to move on. And yes, it was a woman who gave me direction later in life. I think there must be a form of "Chad light" where we end up looking like a Chad, but we are really just a kid with no direction. Those I have seen grow and change.
That last sentence was briliant: "...consumed by the Party." If that isn't the defiinition of Tik Tok, Instagram, and a mirror of the lives of Influencers....I don't know what could be. Just brilliant.
Smiles, Kevin

06/03/2023I know a young man just like Chad. It breaks my heart to see him wasting his days away. And in the process stressing others out. This is a great story. Even though this is a work of fiction I think many people can relate to the many Chads in the world. Well done Cam. Happy Short Story Star of the Day.
Blessings Shelly

06/08/2023Yes, there are far too many Chads in our lives but fortunately a number of them learn and grow into being positive, productive men. Unfortunately, some get and trapped in childhood, never becoming the men they were destined to be. Thank you, Shelly!

06/03/2023That story is so upsetting, I had a brother like Chad and it didn't end in redemption. While they are tortured souls, they torture those around them. Especially the ones that love them. Thank you Can for addressing this issue. Perhaps someone will see themselves and change their life! Congratulations on short story star of the day!

06/08/2023Lillian I am sorry to read that about your brother. Sadly, some of us can't find a way to change. Thank you for getting the purpose of why I write some of these stories. I appreciate you always being so encouraging and supportive. Have yourself a beautiful day!

06/08/2023Shirley, I believe a lot of these kids need tough love. We as parents need to demand more from them, especially if they are adults living under our roofs. I am happy you enjoyed the story.

06/02/2023I hope the Chad's of the world see themselves in your story and smarten up before it is too late. I know your story is 'fiction', but it definitely seems like u r referring to someone real u know.... The young man in the provided pic appears to be a teenager, and my guess is the real Chad is quite a lot older. Anyway, there r some interesting and thought provoking insights here, Cam. Happy short story star of the day.

06/08/2023By now you know me well JD. This cautionary tale was based loosely on a young man I encountered; I pray he wised up. I am pleased that you enjoyed it. Thank you for the honor of story star of the day!
