"Kitty"
Born 1938, M, from Silicon Valley, United StatesOn April 5, 1944, during the depths of World War II, a young housebound girl wrote these lines in “Kitty”, the name she called her journal:
“…I’m my best and harshest critic. I know what’s good and what isn’t. Unless you write yourself you can’t know how wonderful it is; I always used to bemoan the fact that I couldn’t draw, but now I’m overjoyed that at least I can write. And if I don’t have the talent to write books or newspaper articles, I can always write for myself. But I want to achieve more than that. I can’t imagine having to live like Mother, Mrs. van Daan and all the women who go about their work and are then forgotten. I need to have something besides a husband and children to devote myself to! I don’t want to live in vain like most people. I want to be useful or bring enjoyment to all people, even those I’ve never met. I want to go on living even after my death! And that’s why I am so grateful to God for having given me this gift, which I can use to develop myself and to express all that’s inside me!
“When I write I can shake off my cares. My sorrow disappears, my spirits are revived! But, and that’s a big question, will I ever be able to write something great, will I ever become a journalist or a writer?
“I hope so, oh, I hope so very much, because writing allows me to record everything, all my thoughts, ideals and fantasies.”
Tragically, the young girl died of typhus in 1945 at the age of 15, her dreams unfulfilled.
Or were they?
He distraught father found a publisher for “Kitty” and in 1947 it was published in Dutch and five years later in English. “Kitty” has remained in print - and in movies and on the stage - and enjoyed by school children and adults to this day, three-quarters of a century later. The young author, who didn’t live to see her dream come true, is known and loved by millions of people in every country on Earth and is remembered today as the most famous victim of the holocaust.
And what of her journal, “Kitty”? You probably recognize it by its new title: “The Diary of Anne Frank”.

Help Us Understand What's Happening

06/07/2023Thank you, Aleena. Just within the hour my wife and I finished looking at the TV series "A Small Light". This is what my wife Virginia wrote to her group: "I want you let you know how fantastic A Small Light is. This is a short series about the family that hides Anne Frank and family. This is a can't miss tremendous achievement for a TV series. The story is compelling......the acting is superb.......the writing is amazingly believable. It is sooo good that we feel like we are almost there with them. It is rare to find something so beautifully constructed and so real. It is available on Prime for a fee or elsewhere thru several apps. Don't miss it."
