FAMILIAR ALIENS
Born 1979, M, from Blantyre, MalawiFAMILIAR ALLIENS
We are walking down this path for the first time
These narrow streets appear unfamiliar to both you and I
We can tell from the unusual absurd botched faces
Going fast before us
No brand new inspirations
Seem to emanate from
These old-fashioned condos
I wonder if you noticed
The whistling noise
And the clickety-clacking
Of the old city tram gliding by
I wonder if you caught a whiff
Of the savory aroma
broaching from the luxurious lunchrooms nearby
Accentuated by our utmost hunger
To find refuge in these storms
We may both pretend
To mind our hectic lives
In this concrete jungle
Where the similitude in our accents is noticeable
The resemblance of the tone of our skin
Is by far visible
And we seem to share a single background
In the life bygone
Or perhaps in the next one
As busy as you may be
The look in your eyes betrays you
It unravels the secret commonality engraved within us
Something indiscribably alluring
And idyllic in a special way
Don't you miss home
Just like I do ?

04/21/2024What a wonderful poem of two people tking thensame path with different perspectives. Though you may travel through life with one partner, the journey is singular to each one! Terrifically written, a most deserving short story star of the day!
