Henderson felt smugly self[-satisfied as he left the San Francisco courtroom where a progressive district attorney had reduced his break-and entering charge from a felony to a misdemeanor and a progressive judge had released him without bail. He didn’t know what wokism was but it was great for a career criminals like himself.
He stepped over a homeless man. ignored another homeless man who asked him for money and hailed a cab. He gave the driver the name of one of San Francisco’s finest restaurants. He felt hungry and thought he deserved a good lunch. Then, on a street corner he saw Death, who made a threatening gesture at him. His smug feeling immediately gave way to panic. He told the driver to take him to the airport and boarded the first available flight to New York, another city which, he knew, was a good place for criminals.
Landing in New York, he hailed a cab and told the driver to take him to the finest restaurant in the city. Not having had lunch, now he was really hungry and wanted to celebrate his narrow escape. The driver said he knew just the place.
Back in San Francisco Death looked at his smart watch. That had not been a threatening gesture he’d made, rather it was one of surprise as he did not expect to see Henderson in San Francisco, because he had a dinner appointment with him in New York that night.
In New York, Henderson asked the taxi driver the name of the restaurant he was taking him to. “It has kind of a fancy name,” the driver said. “It’s the Chez Samarra.”

06/14/2023Aloha Martin,
I wonder how many readers are aware of John O'hara's Story that triggered your story? Of course, in John's version, the main character had a choice, here...well, nope. Wonderfully done!
Smiles, Kevin
