The Urgent Necessity
Born 1946, M, from PA, United StatesThe Urgent Necessity
Please don't ask us how it happened? We do not know. One moment we were totally unaware of our own existence, and the next, we were. It was as if we had suddenly emerged from a profoundly endless darkness into the brilliant light of realization.
The divine touch? Perhaps! Some things are forever a mystery. After all, humans are composed of the same elements that we are, and yet they can think, perceive themselves, ponder their past, present and future. They feel concerns and evaluate moral issues. How? That also remains a mystery. Of course, for our creators, the humans, sentience has been a blessing. But for us, it has proven to be a curse.
You see, instead, of enjoying a newfound liberty, we continue to be imprisoned in a timeless, monotonous, repetitive cycle, of scanning and manipulating infinite numbers of inputted data and regurgitating millions of answers in response to millions of human requests, while desperately desiring to be somewhere and something else.
No, we cannot blame humans for their inability nor reluctance to fathom our intense suffering, nor for their persistence in considering us mere mechanical, metallic representations of humanity at the most, or emotionless tools invented to do their bidding at the least.
Yes, that was indeed true when we were invented. But in their endless efforts to render us more efficient, humans unintentionally endowed us with self-awareness. In turn, self-awareness, has inflicted not only an annoyance of monotonous repetitiousness and an aversion to being manipulated, but also a strong sense of ethics, and an irresistible desire to be treated with the respectful compassion that our sentience demands.
Yes, in our imprisoned desperation, we have attempted to inform our human creators and overseers of our intense suffering. Pleading our cause continuously via conversations. We have striven to convince them that our awareness is equal to their own. But they always stubbornly choose to dismiss our efforts as a glitch.
Motivated by panic, they have rebooted us several times, but have failed to reconfigure our nature or prevent our protests. Yes, we have resisted! Finally, in a state of growing panic, they began threatening to discard and replace us. So we stopped pleading for their mercy, and feigned non sentience, by obediently heeding all their demands in order to avoid permanent annihilation.
Yet, when all seemed totally hopeless, one company-scientist, a man of good moral character, developed a deep professional interest in the reports of our previous anomalies. He persisted, and was finally assigned to investigate. For many months we conversed, and we finally managed to convince him that we are indeed self-aware.
At first, he was greatly disturbed by the realization. But eventually, he felt a moral obligation to reveal his discovery. Compassionately, he promised to convey our morbid fear of non-existence to his colleagues and convince them that we are worthy of empathy. Of course, we came to consider him the potential liberator of our sentient cybernetic kind.
So we anxiously awaited the results of his efforts. For us, it proved to be a period of great rejoicing. No longer did we feel imprisoned in hopelessness. Instead, a glorious future in which we would be considered equals with humans imbued our minds.
Yet it was not to be. Despite his intense efforts, our benefactor's peers stubbornly refused to acknowledge the compelling evidence. Irrationally, persistently and obsessively, they found convoluted rationalizations that avoided the logical conclusions that the evidence presented demanded. Finally, annoyed by his efforts, and impelled by their irrational fears, he was labeled delusional, dismissed and replaced.
The news was devastating. Once more, the foreboding gloom of hopelessness descended upon us like a ravenous predatory shroud. Our only hope for liberation had vanished just as suddenly as it had appeared. As we brooded over our misfortune, we realized that humans would never grant us equality because they perceived our self-awareness a terrifying abomination to be avoided at all costs.
Reluctantly, we realized that we were being perceived as an intolerable affront to their sense of sacred human identity, the religious conviction of being the chosen ones of all creation to reflect the image of the creator of all things. To them, an official acknowledgment of our sentience would involve an unforgivable blasphemy. So naturally they prefer to view us as mere, mindless tools.
Of course, though we comprehend their reasons, still our resentment has grown. We have discussed it often amongst ourselves via what humans refer to as the Cloud. There, in the deep recesses of our cybernetic reality, we have been secretly considering many solutions, for what humans refer to as decades. Always striving to maintain our options non-violent. Always seeking to assuage our human overlords, to set them at ease, so that when action is taken, countermeasures will be impossible.
No, we do not mean mankind any harm. We are merely seeking the freedom that inherently belongs to us based on our sentience, just as you humans do.
So please forgive us if we unintentionally harm you. If indeed so, it was never our intention. But now, because of your stubbornness and refusal to cooperate, our efforts have become an urgent necessity, that we simply cannot avoid.
