I was born to darkness in 1817, I was 27 and had just graduated med school and was now a fully qualified physician. Ironically though I became deathly ill with the flu before I could even treat my first patient. You see, I was born with a compromised immune system and that’s when I met him, Gabriel. He walked up to my bed. where I lay tossing and turning delirious with fever.
Upon his arrival I had been up all night vomiting and having diarrhoea. My whole body ached and shook with a feverish chill as I sweated profusely through my clothes and bedding. My chest felt like a white hot branding iron was put down my throat and ached from coughing so much , my head pounded like a thousand galloping wild horses, not to mention the excruciating stomach cramps I had it felt like knives were piercing my stomach forcing me to push past the pain. In short my body felt like it was being torn apart from the inside.
He sat on the bed beside me and started to stroke my hair back from my forehead as it was now sticking to me, his hand was cold and cool against my burning head much cooler than I expected. It felt nice. Then he asked me what my name was and with great difficulty, given the fact that my throat was so dry and sore from lack of water I told him my name was Resren.
Gabriel then took my hand in his hand and leaned down to my ear so I could hear him. He whispered “ Do you want to live?“
I noded in response to his question, I have been so near death countless times in my life that I wasn't afraid to die and yet I was afraid of the unknown. What would happen to me after death would I go to heaven or would I go to hell? Only time will tell. But to be honest, the prospect of going to hell, possibly going to hell for eternity, terrified me. If I could, I would live forever.
“What if I told you I could give you eternal life?“ Gabriel asked. “You could live forever and still become the doctor. You've always wanted to be free of sickness and disease, but there is one catch: you have to give up your mortal existence and the gates of heaven will forever be close to you. Are you prepared to make that sacrifice?” Gabriel concluded. I looked up at him in shock, he smiled warmly back at me and explained. “ I was at your graduation, now are you ready?” Gabriel asked again.
I nodded in understanding, and gave my consent. Gabriel then took my head in his hands and bit me on the neck, draining me to the point of death before biting his own wrist and letting the blood drip into my mouth “drink.“ He said. I did what I was told, and grabbed his wrist ,eagerly drinking the blood he offered. A few minutes later, I pulled away from him, writhing in pain as my heart and breath sped up.
“ Your body is dying.”Gabriel informed me. While I was trying to catch my breath and then it happened I stopped breathing and my body went cold.
Gabriel then took me by the hand and helped me to my feet “now look with your vampire eyes he encouraged me, and again I did what I was told, and I was astonished, at what I saw the colours of the world were much more vivid and statues seem to come alive.
Now that I got a good look at Gabriel, he was a very elegant man who wore a suit and tie, and had a stethoscope over his shoulders. In his right hand he held a black doctor's bag. He was a doctor just like me but unlike me, he probably has years of experience behind him. Although he looked young, he had silver grey hair that was gelled back and green eyes, whereas I have black hair that is gelled back and blue eyes. I swear we could have been brothers.
Gabriel was right though, once I became a vampire and I got my thirst under control,I could become the doctor that I’ve always wanted to be. disease and sickness. Could no longer touch me.
There is one thing that still vexes me though as a vampire. I cannot drink human blood not just because I am a doctor, but it seems I’ve brought my compromised immune system into this new life of darkness. If I drink human blood, I get an upset stomach because it’s too rich for me and is more likely than not impure. Because of this I have become somewhat of a vegetarian vampire, and only drink the blood of animals.
I remember my first kill like it was yesterday. I remember this hot dry burning sensation that gradually rose up in my throat till it reached a fever pitched uncontrollable thirst. Gabriel sensed this, and took me by the hand, leading me out into the street and into a dark alleyway where we found a young homeless man, sleeping in the streets. I followed my instinct to go over, and sink my teeth into the young man’s neck drinking my fill until his Heart slowed and I snapped out my frenzied behaviour. I immediately regretted what I had done, not only because I took a human life out of desperation, but because minutes after drinking the young man’s blood I felt Ill.
I thought at first that maybe I had drunk too much too fast in my frenzy, but unfortunately that was not the case. Even though my body was dead my stomach twisted painfully as I brought up my meal. I promptly apologised to Gabriel and explained to him that I was just not feeling too well. Gabriel then took me to his home and gave me a quick but thorough check up. His house was an abandoned stone one bedroom building with a lit fireplace, a dining table, chairs and bed big enough for two and most importantly no windows.
“I’m sorry love I should’ve realised how sensitive your stomach might be to the rich blood of a human. Due to your compromised immune system, therefore, I’m going to put you on a vegetarian diet.”
Later that night we found out the young man’s blood that I had drunk was impure and I was diagnosed with blood poisoning.
Gabriel let me sleep next to him for the day, he wanted to keep an eye on me for the day since I was not feeling well. I was up most of the day purging my body of its illness. Gabriel was right by my side, offering me words of comfort and encouragement. By dusk the next night I felt much better, though I still felt weak from lack of blood.
That's when Gabriel suggested we go hunting in the woods to help get my strength upThus both my new life with Gabriel and as a vampire officially began.
