Fair Play
Born 1948, F, from Epping. Essex, United KingdomFair Play
Jed was gorgeous, gay and a stockbroker. This afternoon he sat in a meeting chaired by Don, the CEO of the company. The topic of today’s agenda was ‘Equality, Diversity and Inclusion’ and how to develop this policy in their workplace.
Don was concluding his talk while Jed was clock watching.
‘Right’ said Don ‘we’re agreed, No gay candidates to be elected to the board’.
Jed smiled inside. God what a hypocrite. He wished Don would get a move on.
He needed to get back to the flat by 6pm, shower, change the sheets, chill some wine.
His first client liked the black satin sheets, but first he would want to wrestle which was his idea of foreplay.
Jed wondered what Don would think if he knew his first client of the evening was the chair of a prestigious banking company linked to their stockbrokers’ company. Indeed, Jed knew that Don played a weekly game of golf with this client.
What a deal.
‘Hey ho’ thought Jed as he continued to watch the meeting drawing to a close, ‘reckon I’ll screw £250 out of him tonight. Nice bunce if you can get it’.
With a start, Jed realised Don was asking him something.
‘Sorry Don, miles away, what was that?’
‘I’m asking you if you’re in agreement with the policy?’
‘Well, what I’m hearing is that we say one thing and do another. Is that right gentlemen?’
The board members, all male, looked at him.
The vice chair said ‘Have you got a problem Jed, do you not agree that we don’t want gays on the board?’
‘Heaven forbid. We don’t want to go down that road do we. But we must be seen to be following the current government agenda of Inclusion.’
And he smiled at them all. Inside he was boiling. The hypocrisy of it. But then he didn’t want to be losing his huge salary and all the benefits that went with this lifestyle. And in his own small way he was getting his own back on them all. How had they never guessed about him?
Standing up, he brushed down his trousers showing his shapely body off to perfection. He noticed Joe, another of the leading stockbrokers, looking at him speculatively.
‘Hmm’ thought Jed ‘I wonder’.
Leaning over to Joe, he said ‘Drink tomorrow night after work Joe?’
Joe looked him in the eye and then said ‘Sure’. Then he winked at Jed and they both laughed.

11/30/2023Well written - good commentary on true situations still being contrived and tolerated.

11/30/2023I loved this story because I could relate to it. I'm bisexual, and I used to work at a church as a kitchen assistant. When I told them I had a girlfriend, they fired me. So this story stuck out to me because it was relatable and beautifully written.

11/30/2023Many businesses have a "Don't ask don't tell" policy. "But the Old Boy" System is still in play. Enjoyed reading this. Good writing. Congratulations on Short Story Star of the Day!

11/29/2023For me, it is hard to believe that any business or organization would be legally able to exclude gays from anything any more. I don't know about the UK, but I definitely think they couldn't get away with it here in the US. But it's a thought provoking work, none the less. Happy short story star of the day, Kristin.

11/30/2023What a lovely surprise on an icy, foggy morning! There's a lot of 'lip service' paid to Inclusion here ....say one thing, do another!
