Saving Santa
Born 1929, M, from Roseville/CA, United StatesSaving Santa---2023
I was putting the last ornament on the tree when Jeeves came in holding the phone. “It’s, ah, the North Pole again,” he said. Should I tell him you’re busy?”
Uh, oh, I said to myself. This has to be trouble. Aloud, I said, “Nah, I’ll take it.” Jeeves handed me the phone and discreetly left. “How ya doing, Claus? Everything going okay?"
It’s not. The elves are threatening a strike? They want more money, I guess. You can’t blame them. Inflation is sky-high. Give them a token raise and a little bonus. That should do it.
What? They want 25% over four years and a cost of-living increase? And better retirement? They must be reading about the auto strike we had here. Yeah, those demands would be tough to meet. Clause, I hate to say this, you’re such a jolly good fellow, but you’re going to have to get tough with them. Tell them if they can’t be reasonable next year you’re going to AI.
What’s AI?
Artificial intelligence. Yeah, it’s the big thing down here. Everyone’s scared they’ll lose their jobs. Tell the elves that next year all the toy-making can be done by robots and you won’t have to pay them anything. Yeah, that should do it.
Anything else?
Okay, but look Clause, after the first we gotta do lunch. Yeah, I’ll explain all about AI. Okay. And a ho-ho-ho to you, too. Good night.”
I put down the phone and called out to Jeeves, “Jeeves, bring me my stockings. I gotta hang ‘em up with care.”
