Steven's journey
Born 2009, M, from Nuevo León, MexicoThere’s a 15 year old boy whose name is Steven, he loves playing soccer at his park. Steven doesn’t have much money, he has a one bedroom house, it has no window glasses. His mom is the only one he has left of his family. Steven’s dream is to be a soccer player. Playing soccer is his passion. Every time he plays with a ball he is happy.
His mom works in collecting trash. Steven sometimes helps her, she can’t do that all alone, she needs help. Steven’s mom can’t afford to go to school. All he likes to do and does when he’s not helping his mom is to play soccer in the park. The park is a small park that doesn’t have lots of things. It only has a soccer field that has only dirt. Also, it has games like monkey bars but for little kids. It isn’t a big park. Since he plays soccer everyday he’s very good and talented. He’s the best of his neighbors and the people that play in the park. He’s really good. His mom didn’t even notice how good he was, she was just working everyday to make money for Steven. Steven is grateful for everything he has even though he doesn’t have much. More time passed and it was just a normal day for Steven, he went to the park to play soccer.
There was a Manchester United scout, which is a team in England. The scout wanted to see talented boys in poor neighborhoods. He saw Steven playing really well and he wanted to bring him to Manchester. He tried to go to Steven when he knew his potential. He knew Steven could make it pro so he went and told Steven. He told him that he was a scout for a team in England, he wanted him for his 15 year old Manchester United team. They’re the ones that when they grow up, if they are kept in the academy they will make it pro. Steven of course was very excited and told the scout that of course because for him soccer is his passion. He loves playing it and he really thinks he could be a professional soccer player. So, Steven went to tell his mom about it. His mom told him that she couldn’t afford the flight to go to England, it was very expensive.
The next day the scout went to Steven and asked him if he would go. Steven said that he really wanted to but he couldn’t. His mom couldn’t afford the flight nor the hotel in England for that long. The scout was sad but then he knew that Steven would go pro, he had faith in him. That’s why he decided to pay for the flight. Steven and his mom were very grateful and thanked the scout because he was really nice. So Steven went with the scout to England. It was the first time Steven had gone anywhere that wasn’t San Francisco, his first time on a plane. He was also very scared at the start because there was turbulence. Also, he loved the plane because they gave him food because it was a 16 hour flight. They finally got to Manchester and since Steven couldn’t go to a hotel the scout let him stay at his house. The scout’s house was very big and modern. It was shiny, it had a gym, a pool and 5 bedrooms! It was a lot for Steven. He was delighted to sleep in that house for lots of time. The first day he trained he was very excited. The soccer field from Manchester looks very rich from the perspective of Steven. It’s well-maintained, no dirt and the nets are as fine as a palace. The other kids were very good too. Steven hadn’t played with players his level in a long time. He loved to play against and with them because it was very competitive. The coaches saw Steven’s potential and they were very impressed. All of the other kids from the academy were rich and had lots of money. Steven was the only one that wasn’t that fortunate like them. Since Steven knew that his mom was struggling he had to try his hardest to make it pro.
One day, Steven and his teammates were training really hard. It was raining but they still were trying their hardest. They had their first game the next day. So they wanted to play in it and win their position to show their potential. Since everyone was playing rough Steven was too. Suddenly, one kid dived to him and he tore Steven’s ACL. Steven was devastated, he couldn’t play for all season, he couldn’t show his potential to the world. He didn’t know if the academy would cut him since he would probably lose talent and won’t play for lots of time. Manchester United told Steven that they would hold onto him for now but if someone would show up that is very good, they would probably cut him. There are many kids that would want to earn Steven’s spot at the academy. Steven was nervous about it.
Since Steven couldn’t play soccer for a while he knew he had to do exercise in another way. He couldn’t lose his shape and muscles, he needed it to become pro. So, he started to go to the gym of Manchester United everyday for at least 3 hours. The gym was very big, it had everything so that you could become a pro one day. That was the goal for Manchester United, they wanted kids like Steven to go to play for Manchester. He really put in his dedication into staying in shape for his team. The Manchester United scouts found a kid who was really good and could be a good player for the academy. They told Steven that there was a possibility that he would be replaced. Steven was very stressed. He could lose his chances to become pro and disappoint his mother. Something unexpected happened, the new player that would replace Steven got injured, he can’t play soccer for his whole life. Poor kid but Steven got his chance back.
After a whole season Steven finally came back to play. He recovered and surprisingly he didn’t lose talent. The coaches were very surprised about him because he came back like he never left. A few more seasons happened at the academy. He was the best of them and the coaches really liked him. When he turned 18 he got called up to be a bench player in the first team. He got very excited and emotional, he had made it pro! In his very first game as a bench player he was substituted on the game to play it. In the last minute of the game he scored a goal. He shredded in tears and it was the happiest moment of his life. He had a long journey ahead of him. That was just the beginning.
