Last Day Before Break

Twas the day before break and John didn’t know
That the staff had prepared a spectacular show.

They stayed very quiet and kept the kids quiet too,
Which as everyone knows, is not easy to do.

And yet there was something, a giggle, a smile
That the staff seemed to share all of the while.

Lunch and recess went on without any red lights.
And thankfully, THANKFULLY, there weren’t any fights.

Only one kid had to go home ill.
The nurse’s office was quiet and still.

But suddenly, there arose such a clatter.
John leaped from his desk to see what was the matter.

Out of the office he flew like a flash,
And very nearly tripped over some trash.

Something was happening down in gym -
Was that, was THAT a Christmas hymn?

When what to his wondering eyes did appear,
But the staff dressed up as elves and reindeer!

They were singing and leaping and making kids laugh,
And John thought, “What the heck is wrong with the staff?”

He sat in the only available chair,
Unable to do anything but stare.

In shock he sat and watched the whole show.
And then it was time for the students to go.

Carpool and buses took the kids away,
As if it had been just another day.

Then the staff filed back in for just one more song.
Though still in a daze, John sang along.

Then they all joined in a group to end it just right,
And said, “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”
