"Boo!"
Born 1951, M, from Wilmington NC, United StatesSylvia had to find a way to stretch her meager budget. She wasn’t much of a cheapskate, most kind people are not. They are just frugal. She was frugal for two very profound reasons: practicality and necessity.
“Maybe I will get lucky today and find a blouse.”
*****
Mathew didn’t buy clothes very often. Fashion and Mathew weren’t words you found often in the same sentence. So when he did buy clothes, it was off to the Local Good Will, or Thrift Shops to find some shirts and pants.
Oh sure, he had enough money to buy Fashion Clothes, even hire a Tailor. But Mathew believed in simplicity. He was a minimalist by Nature... even though he had a Bank Account that would allow him to be a “conspicuous consumer.” That thought would have made him laugh.
“I am going to look for some bright colored shirts on that next rack.”
*****
Sylvia pulled the blouses apart on the rack, hoping to get a better view of the blouse that caught her eye. From the other side of the row of blouses, a young man had just pulled the shirts to the side to do exactly the same thing.
His eyes widened (so did Sylvia’s). A twinkle, huge smile, and then these words came out of his mouth.
“Boo!”
She couldn’t help it. She laughed out loud.
Nobody knew why Mathew called his wife of twenty five years: “Boo.” But Sylvia did.
