It Could Have Been Worse
Born 1947, M, from Oceanside, United StatesIt Could Have Been Worse
If this story seems flawed, you’re correct. I don’t know anything about investing, but I liked the idea of someone getting one up on a con artist.
As Jason Howard watched the videos of the trial on YouTube, he smiled while thinking about all those poor suckers who lost most of their savings to the pyramid scam. Thank God, he wasn’t as greedy as them, he thought.
He met Alexander Schilling at a media conference. The investment specialist’s spiel sounded great, until he insisted nothing could go wrong. That’s when the red flags went up for Jason. This was why he invested only a thousand dollars, even though Schilling insisted any investment was guaranteed to triple. Not happy with Howard’s measly investment, Schilling accepted it anyway.
Over the next year, Jason continued to hand over only a thousand dollars at a time. Then once he received his rewards, he invested them in more legitimate ventures. Eventually, he managed to accumulate hundreds of millions, which he used to acquire the mansion-like home by the lake he always envisioned.
What he hadn’t counted on was his new bride’s avarice. While he was attending an out of state seminar, she cleaned out his savings, taking off with his Maserati and his very young mistress.
Although the thefts were substantial, Jason continued to smile. That’s because he was positive she knew nothing about his offshore accounts.
Unfortunately, she did.
