The Suicide Conversation
Born 2007, M, from West Bengal, IndiaIt's a Monday morning. The start of a new week. Just like other Mondays, today too the door of house no. 24 in the Olive Road awaits to be opened to make way for Raul to get into his car and drive to his office. He is a government employee, who works in the Mayor's office.
The wooden door as usual gets opened but not in a rush but calmly. He ought to be hurrying because the clock is running against him.
“Off to the office, huh?” Comes the regular comment from the neighbor Mr. Chalker, who waters his garden at this time of the day.
Raul gets startled as if he was lost in a deep thought or as if he was scared about something. He stares at Mr. Chalker with fearful eyes.
“Are you okay, Raul?” Mr. Chalker asks again.
“Don’t behave like this!”
“Uhh, uh, ye-yeah, yeah,” Raul replies.
“Have a nice day!” Mr. Chalker says with a smile.
Raul doesn't reply but keeps on staring at him wanting to be helped.
“Reply!”
Raul shivers, “Ye-yes, you too.”
Mr. Chalker feels strange. Raul was acting weird. He asks, “Are you okay my boy? You seem to have some trouble.”
“I am fine, good.” Raul walks to his car slowly.
“Act Natural!”
He opens the door and sits inside.
“Now start the engine, Raul and drive like you do everyday.”
Raul starts the engine as the car soon leaves the neighborhood.
His office is not too far from his house. It's a 30 minutes drive. He usually plays the music in his car even though he is running late. But today the car is silent. It is pindrop silence. He is sweating on a cold morning in December. He is even breathing shakily. Something is worrying him. Something very dangerous.
He reaches the Municipal Corporation building and parks the car in the parking lot but doesn't get out.
“Feeling afraid?”
“Why? Why are you doing this? What have I done?” Raul speaks in a scared voice.
“Your sacrifice is a step to a better country.”
“Why like this?”
“You know what? You don't know what they think about you. You all are just like the stray dogs and cats to them. You are believed to beg for a life to live. They live your lives. They snatch it from you all. And I am giving you an opportunity to be the face of the new age. You should be glad and proud.”
“Why can't you do it? Why us?”
“You are a common man just like other common men. You have the power which nobody has.”
“Who are you then?”
“I? I am your soul. You are my body. I am within you. Doesn't the body do what the soul wants? Hence, I want my body to go inside the building to the exact place I have told it to go and do the needful.
Let's go.”
Raul gets out of the car. The fear has spread throughout his face. He feels colder than ever before. He is afraid.
He enters the building. There are a lot of people running hither and thither with documents and files. A huff and puff in every corner. Raul gulps.
“Don't act suspicious. Act natural.”
He walks a bit and then stops. He looks at other people.
“What happened Raul?”
Raul is quiet and staring at nowhere. He is thinking of something. He wants to run. Run for his life. Maybe scream. Scream for help. Maybe it can save him from the intense pressure he is bearing.
“Raul, no! No! Raul!”
He gulps again, succumbs all his energy stored within and screams, “HELP ME I–”
“Shit!”
Raul is not able to complete as the bomb fixed to his body blasts within a second. The blast, a huge one, engulfs the whole of the ground floor. Each and every employee around becomes its victim. The heart of the city experiences a shocking scenario.
