I'd pushed for this so I guess it was right I should be the one to speak at the first ever worldwide conference of genies. We'd been granted special dispensation to come out of whatever container we were normally kept in. Here to discuss what had become a major problem. We were bored bits, more than that, we were disillusioned. Always being asked for the same wishes. Pick any 3 from around 10. A poll had found that the top three were 1) to be a billionaire (a sign of the times, millionaire doesn't cut it any more) 2) eternal youth 3) to be famous.
"Fellow genies," I began, "the time has come to make a stand. These humans wish for the same things whilst continuing to destroy everything around them. We need to get bolshie."
Silence. Was that better than dissenting voices?
"We must start refusing some wishes, waiting until they ask for something that will benefit everyone not just themselves."
The vote was unanimous. We settled on our top three wishes along with others we would grant. Humans were easy to train. They would soon catch on. We would go back to our containers and be humanity's conscience.
A few weeks after the conference a strange thing happened. Hotlines across oceans and continents started transmitting the same message in all languages.
"It is no good having future targets, we must have policies for now, not for five years, not even for a year or a month. We cannot wait, it has to be NOW."
As for the three wishes I shall let the reader draw their own conclusions. Unlike the vast majority of human decisions there will probably be consensus on this.
