The doll
Born 1976, M, from Delhi, IndiaNina was looking at the flowers in the garden of her home through the window. She was sad and alone in her room. She had been admitted to the hospital last week due to severe pain, high fever, and vomiting. She had gone through the painful treatment and the last evening she was discharged from the hospital. Doctors said that she had no chance to survive more than a month. She was a cancer patient. Today was her birthday.
Her father came in and put his hand on her shoulder, she turned and saw her father. He was sad but he smiled and said, "Happy birthday my daughter." And he handed a packet to her. It was a gift. Nina was happy getting the gift. She unpacked the packet and found a beautiful wooden doll in it. She looked at the doll. It seemed to her that the doll was smiling and wanted to talk to her. She was delighted to get the doll. Her father was happy to see the smile on her face.
Nina was ten years old and had been confined to bed for the last two years. She had no friends and always wished to have a good friend so she made a friendship with the doll and she sometimes talked to the doll.
It was a wooden doll with big eyes and black hair. Nina's father had seen this wooden doll at an antique shop. When he saw the doll for the first time, it seemed to him as if the doll wanted to say something to him and was happy to meet him. He was fascinated and bought the doll as a gift to Nina on her birthday.
Nina also had blue eyes and black hair. Her parents did their best to save the life of their daughter but could not save her. One night Nina had a high fever, severe pain, and vomiting. Her father called the doctor. After examining her, the doctor said to her father, "Her last time has come." Hearing this, her mother began to weep and left the room. The next morning, Nina took her last breath. Her eyes were closed and the doll was in her hands. Her mother, when taking out the doll from Nina's lifeless hands, noticed that the eyes and face of the doll were wet as if she was shedding a tear in grief. She got afraid of it and threw the doll in the storeroom.
A few days after Nina's death, her parents vacated the house and left the city to live in another city. The owner of the house, put the board at the gate of the house showing the house was for rent.
The two-story house was old but strong having a beautiful entrance gate with a beautiful vine on its arch. The house had a beautiful garden in front and the back has beautiful flowering trees and shrubs.
After a month or two, A family came to live in that house. It was the Mishra family. Shyam was the head of the family. Shyam's wife Mamta and two daughters Rita and Mita and a son Raju and Shyam's mother Meera. Shyam was a bank officer.
The children were happy to get a big house and a garden. They had a plan to grow roses and vegetables.
When they were cleaning up the house, Rita found a doll in the store room on the second floor. This was the same doll, with which Nina used to play and talk.
Rita looked at the face of the doll and felt as if the doll wanted to say something to her and was happy to meet her. Rita smiled and decided not to throw the doll into the dustbin.
Rita gave it to her younger sister Mita who was fond of toys. When Mita saw it, she, too, felt as if the doll wanted to say something to her and the doll was happy to meet her. She asked Rita, "Where did you find it? The eyes of the doll are so beautiful and blue!"
Rita replied, "In the storeroom. It was an old but beautiful doll."
Mita immediately included it in her collection of toys. Mita was eight years old and was obstinate, peevish, and lazy. She did not take any interest in her studies. Sometimes she did not even complete her homework.
One day, Grandma Meera saw Mita playing with the doll. She asked Mita, "Where did you get it from?"
Mita replied, "sister Rita gave it to me. She had gotten it from the storeroom."
Grandma took the doll in her hand and scrutinized it for a little while and then said, "You should not play with it. Go and through it away."
Mita asked, "What is the problem with it?"
Grandma said, "God knows who is the owner of this doll. How old it is? Someone might left it on purpose after doing magical rituals on it. It is unwise to keep it. Go and throw it out of the house."
Mita did not like that idea and argued, "But is so beautiful doll. Look its eyes, these
are so beautiful and blue."
But Grandma was a timid lady. She didn't allow Mita to keep the doll with her. She snatched the doll from Mita and through it out of the house. But Mita was an obstinate and naughty girl. After an hour or two she went out and brought the doll stealthily again in and hid it in her room. She began to play with the doll in the absence of Grandma. One night, when Mita was doing her homework in her room, she heard the sound of giggling coming from the open cupboard where the doll was laid. She turned to the cupboard and found a smile on the face of the doll. She got afraid. But the smile was so cute that she forgot her fear and moved to the doll. Mita could hear the doll.
The next morning, to the surprise of the Singh family, Mita got ready for school without throwing a tantrum. She finished up her breakfast on her own. Raju asked Rita in surprise, "What happened to Mita? She is behaving differently!" Rita also was surprised and she just shrugged her shoulders in response.
Mita's father had to ask her to do her homework every evening but this evening Mita began doing her homework without his asking. The next day she did the same and so on. Raju was curious by nature. He wanted to know the reason behind these overnight changes in her behavior.
So one evening he peeped into her room through the ajar door. He found Mita talking to the doll. He heard all their conversation. The next day, in the absence of Mita, went to her room to see the doll. He scrutinized the doll but found nothing special about it. He even tried to talk to the doll but found no response from it. At last, he got annoyed at the doll threw it to the bed, and went out of the room.
Mita's behavior was improving day by day. Her parents were happy with her.
One day Grandma went to Mita's room and found the doll lying on the bed. She got angry and began to rebuke Mita. Hearing Grandma, Raju reached there. Grandma snatched the doll from Mita and gave it to Raju and asked him to throw it out of the house. Raju took the doll out of the house to a dustbin but before throwing the doll into it, he once looked at the doll and felt as if the doll was smiling and was happy. He changed his mind and brought the doll back to the home and hid it inside a box in the storeroom.
Mita was sad without the doll. She tried to search for it but she could not find it. She was asking for the doll. Her father bought her a new doll but she did not even look at it and kept on asking for the same old doll.
One day Mita fell ill. Her father Shyam called a doctor. The doctor examined her and prescribed some medicine for her. He told them that she would take some days to get well.
Raju asked her, "Why are you insisting on that old doll?"
Mita replied, "It is like a friend to me." hearing this, Began to think something and said to her after a while, "I will try to search the doll."
Raju went to the storeroom and opened the box in which he had hidden the doll. He took out the doll from the box and looked at it carefully. This time, he felt as if the doll were asking him to take her to Mita.
He took the doll with him. At night, when the grandma was sleeping in his room, he went to Mita's room. Mita was awoken. He said to her, "Here, is your doll."
She got happy seeing her doll and said, "Thank you, brother, for bringing back the doll."
She began getting well the next day. Raju told the father all about the doll and requested him to let Mita keep it with her.
The next day Grandma saw Mita playing with the doll but she said nothing to Mita. Mita got well soon.
Time passed and Mita came to the age when children stopped playing with toys. Instead of throwing it away or giving it to someone, she kept the doll in a safe place. She got busy with her studies and her career and almost forgot about the doll.
Time flew and she grew into a young and pretty lady and got married to a young man. After marriage, she got busy with her husband and home chores.
And a day came when she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Being a mother she was happy and busy with bringing up the baby. Time flies. That day Mita was going to celebrate the second birthday of her daughter. She was so happy. Her daughter was sleeping on the bed. All of a sudden, the idea of giving her daughter a gift came into her mind. She thought for a while about what gift to give and then a smile came into her face. She opened her almirah and took out the doll from a box. It was the same doll with which she used to play in her childhood. It seemed to her that the doll was smiling. She took the doll to her daughter who was now awoken and looking for her mother. Mita handed the doll to her daughter. The daughter took it in her hands and looked at it for a little while. The doll was smiling at her. The daughter looked up at her mother and began to giggle with joy. Now the doll had a new friend to play and talk to.

06/29/2024What an interesting premise. Thanks for this story. The doll was so patient. Comes with immobility I guess.
