Miracles. Miracles. Miracles.
Born 1951, M, from Wilmington NC, United StatesAloha all,
A friend started a conversation about "Miracles." in our Chat Room. I loved all the stories that came from that conversation. But I noticed that nobody noticed the miracle they are part of every single day. So I wrote this back to everybody:
Miracles. Miracles. Miracles. I loved the experiences relayed in this thread. Read every comment and enjoyed them too. So let me take a bit different approach. The miracle that most folks don't even think about, because you live it every day. You. Yep. You are a miracle. When I learned to put the dots together about how I got here, and how the place I live (Earth) got here...well, it stuns me.
The word unique is bandied about, but Humans, each and every one of us...is unique. There will never be another you. Some folks seem to take that for granted. Those of you who believe (and belief holds one of the miracles I find both beautiful and powerful: Love.) in a God, seem to me at least, to take His work for granted.
So let's take a peek into you being you. First Physics has a couple of laws...not many, but two of them are connected: conservation of matter, and conservation of energy. So you don't ever really die from a physical standpoint, you just sort of go back into the pot. And that part that kept you going all those years Science calls "Consciousness". People of Faith call it Soul. Whatever its name, we can't fully describe or capture it. Thoughts are a form of energy...so they too, like all the other Atoms and particles in your body...are hanging out somewhere.
Do you know how many stars had to blow up, so you could be here? Carbon and Oxygen are just some of the Star Dust that makes us up. And then you gathered enough of that stuff on a rocky cinder called Earth. Miracles upon miracles.
And then you got water. Water is something most of us do not understand how complicated that stuff really is ; people still study it, and you might be surprised how many forms it takes. Ph.D abound on just water and its properties. Then you got some slime to generate oxygen. Oh boy, here comes Life as we know it! We couldn't go visit the dinosaurs, the oxygen in their atmosphere would smother us. The pressure gradient was so high that bugs like millipedes and centipedes reached lengths of six feet or more- without lungs. Yikes
So do the Math, what are the odds that two people lived long enough to have offspring, and that offspring lived long enough. Just the odds of your parents meeting, no matter how fleeting are astronomical. And the battle to fertilize the egg...legendary. You are a miracle. Plain and simple.
The odds of you being here, and the odds of having a place that supports your form of life, are so bizarrely big, that it qualifies as a miracle. And what some of us have done, with a single lifetime to do it in (at least that we are aware of) and yeah, I have seen a miracle. I am one.

07/31/2024Well said. The only thing that you left out, probably because it was not related to your premise, is that the odds which resulted in us also indicate that we are not alone.

07/31/2024I agree. Whether we will ever meet those other folks...that is the question. But they are out there.

07/12/2024You're right, Kevin, we are all miracles. This reminds me of Einstein's famous statement, "either everything is a miracle or nothing is. I choose to believe that everything is". Me too.

07/12/2024Hey JD,
I never heard that quote before. I love it! I agree with you... and Einstein!
