Born 1976, M, from Delhi, IndiaAsha finished up her breakfast hurriedly, picked up her school bag, and rushed for the door. When she opened the door she found a small black puppy shivering with cold at the doorstep. She likes puppies. She took the puppy in her hands and began to stroke it. The puppy closed its eyes and began wagging its tail. She was in a hurry, so she took the puppy with her to the end of the street left it there, and headed for school.
Asha was a twelve-year-old girl studying in a middle school in a small town named Chandpur. Her father was a farmer having a farmhouse in a small village near the town.
At noon, When Asha was returning home, she found the puppy wandering in the street. Seeing her, the puppy whined and began walking behind her. She tried to scare the puppy away but the puppy kept on walking behind her. The puppy went behind her up to her home. When she was opening the main gate of the home, the puppy began rolling around her. Somehow she managed to keep the puppy out of the gate.
In the night, after dinner, when Asha along with her younger brother Raju got out for a stroll, she found the puppy at the main gate. The puppy was hungry and was looking at Asha with the hope of getting something from her to eat. She took pity on the puppy and gave leftover food to eat.
The puppy was hungry and when it got the food, expressed his gratitude by wagging his tail and got busy eating. Raju began stroking the puppy. Asha was looking at the puppy. All of a sudden the idea of having this puppy as a pet came into her mind.
So the next day Asha took the puppy to her mother and asked her, "Could I have this puppy as a pet?"
seeing the puppy Asha's mother got irritated and said to her, "Have you gone mad? Throw this dirty dog out of the home wash your hands and change your clothes. Dogs are dirty, forget about keeping a dog as a pet." Hearing this from her mother, she got sad. Seeing her sister sad, Raju asked her, "Why are you so sad sister?" Asha replied, "I want that puppy as a pet but the mother is not ready to keep a dog as a pet in the home."
Raju said, "I, too, want that puppy as a pet." He thought for a while and then said, "Why don't you ask father for it? Father always listen to you. He will allow you for it."
Asha said, "That's a good idea. I will ask him."
"I will talk to your mother.", Asha's father assured her after hearing her request about the puppy.
The next morning when the family was having breakfast, Asha's father said to her, "You can have a dog as a pet." Hearing this Asha's face got glowing with happiness and excitement and she said to her father, "Thank you, papa."
Her father said to her, "But keep in mind that you will not waste too much time on that puppy. Your studies shouldn't be disturbed by that puppy."
Asha assured her father, "Yes papa, I will keep these things in my mind."
Her mother said, "And one more thing, you shall keep the puppy out of the home, don't bring it inside the home. Dogs spread dirt. I hate dogs."
Asha got confused at this. Her father said, "You can keep the puppy in the garden."
And now Raju said to Asha, "I have an idea of making a kennel in the garden." and then he looked at his father for approval. His father nodded and began smiling.
Raju said enthusiastically, "It would be fun....."
His mother put in, "You are an expert in doing useless things."
Both brother and sister were happy getting the puppy as a pet. Raju built a kennel using wood, cardboard, and polythene sheets. After a long argument, they agreed to give the puppy the name 'Rani'.
In this way, Rani got a home and an owner.
Rani turned out to be an adorable and obedient female dog and soon she won the hearts of neighbours too. The neighbors' children used to play with Rani. No unfamiliar person or animal could dare to enter the house in the presence of Rani Soon she won the hearts of the father.
But Asha's mother still hated Rani and didn't allow Rani to enter the home. She didn't allow Rani even to come near to her. Rani, too, soon gave up the idea of going near to the mother.
Time flew and now Rani was pregnant. She gave birth to two cute puppies. seeing these two puppies, Asha's mother got furious. She said to Asha, "Look, your Rani has given these two puppies. I don't want to see these dirty puppies in my home. Go and leave them far away from out of the home." But Asha did not follow her mother's advice. Fortunately, a child from a neighbor took one of the puppies as a pet.
Asha's father had the idea of leaving another puppy on his farm when it grew up. He said to Asha's mother that the puppy would become a watchdog on his farm.
A month passed and now it was the harvesting time. One day the family decided to visit the farm and celebrate a festival of the harvest. Asha and Raju were happy because they had a lot to see and a lot of time to play with the children of the village. They had an old house on their farm. They had a plan to stay in that old house for a week. They decided to take Rani and her puppy with them. Asha's mother was against the idea of taking Rani with them. Later she advised that Rani should be left there in the village.
They reached the village by van. The entire family was happy to have a bumper harvest. Bumper harvest means a lot of money. After reaching the village, they cleaned the house and began the preparation for the harvest festival.
One morning, Asha's mother along with Asha and Raju was going to a temple to offer a prayer. There were a few people on the way to the temple and there were thick bushes on either side of the way. Rani was walking behind them. All of a sudden they heard a rustling noise in the bushes and something out of a bush pounced on Asha's mother. It was a leopard. She was quick enough to dodge the leopard. The Leopard made another pounce on Asha. But by this time, Rani had come into action. Rani without thinking twice, ran at the leopard. Before the leopard could touch Asha, Rani began to grapple with it. This fight gave Asha, Raju, and the mother a chance to run away from the scene. They ran and called people for help. Some passersby tried to save Rani by throwing stones at the leopard and making noises but the leopard killed Rani and dragged her into bushes.
Asha's mother began crying with sorrow. She was saying that Rani gave her life in an attempt to save our lives. Hearing the news of the leopard attack, Asha's father, when reached the spot, Asha's mother told him how Rani saved their lives. Hearing this he said to her, "I had heard about the loyalty of dogs, but today I realized it."
Asha's mother said to him, "I never treated Rani well, but she saved me and my children from the leopard. I was so wrong. From now I will never mistreat any animal."
Saying so she took Rani's puppy in her lap and began to stroke the puppy. Her thinking about the dogs had changed now.
