The Time is Now
Born 1988, F, from Anambra, NigeriaThe election is gone.
Another will come.
I hope that a 5-kg bag of rice in exchange for your conscience will last you for eight years.
Or have they learned to leave office if a second term is not attained?
The election is gone.
Another will come.
Till then, make merry, Mr. Ballot Box Thug.
Or isn't that the only benefit and job you've proven to them that befits your person?
Keep putting your life at risk while their children live in luxury abroad with our national treasury as their generational inheritance.
Who knows if you were promised a slot across the border for the same luxury someday?
A daydreamer you are if your response is yes.
The election is gone.
Another will come.
Mr. Party Ward Chairman is now a motorcycle owner.
Just a few days ago, his obituary was announced.
Has Peter been robbed to pay Paul?
His messiah legislator has sent his son to Harvard with funds meant for bad roads.
And now those deep potholes have swallowed the whole village alive.
Today is his burial.
I heard mourners will not attend as a litre of patrol has gone from 65 to 600.
A new party ward chairman is here.
And another election is on the way.
Let's see if he will choose a motorcycle or a good road.
The election is gone.
Another will come.
Mrs. Police Officer, Were you in the poll to maintain peace and orderliness or to spy for your oppressors?
I caught you red-handed behind voters, signaling the people's choices to the party agents.
Ichie Onwuka, who voted right, was not approved by you, and thus there was no kobo for him.
For that, everyone voted wrong, as they needed that coin to feed their homes.
But don't be deceived by the gun in your hand; we will all smell this doom together in the end.
The election is gone.
Mr. Professor Returning Officer is now a university vice chancellor.
This trade by barter didn't go wrong; bet it if you doubt.
All I see is a man who is 98 and not 60.
Remind me of the constitutional retirement age again.
The election is gone.
And our doom is here.
I hope they've picked up your call or given you a coin like they used to.
Isn't that enough proof that your interest matters less to them?
In case you don't know, both Mr. Thug and Mrs. Police will learn to live with this until eight years are gone.
The election is gone.
But all hope is not lost.
We can still right our wrongs, If only we could reason together in unity and love.
For in unity, we shall win; in disunity, we are won.
This is the only country we've got.
Let's guard it with all our might and strength.
When another election comes,
Desist from being bought, no matter the price.
I urge us to vote right and protect our votes until our choice of candidate is announced.
The time is now.
Let's insist on a system that works like our counterparts abroad.
You and I can pay this price for our generation yet unborn.

07/26/2024Political corruption seems to be the way of the world and the 'rule of law' rather than the exception, unfortunately. We are dealing with many of the same issues here in the USA. I hope and wish for better leadership, and better choices, for us all. Thanks for sharing your thoughtful and heartfelt words, Chiamaka.

07/25/2024I like the message you are trying to give about political corruption in Africa, but you could have used a better form.
