A Ten Year Old's View
Born 1950, M, from Bromsgrove, United KingdomSunday is an old person, someone over forty, stuck in its ways.
It's a family roast and pudding on even the hottest of days.
I'm made to dress up, go to Sunday School, put on a jacket and tie.
I mean I'm ten, that's way too young to be feeling like I want to sigh.
Monday is an excited child, looking forward to going to school
My gang to see again, don't mess with us if your team is Liverpool.
Hang onto that because once in your teens this isn't how it will be.
A day you will want to stay in bed. Sceptical? Just you wait and see.
Tuesday is a worried child knowing that his homework hasn't been done.
Why did I have to stay out for so long? Will I be the only one?
Frantically doing it before the bell goes for registration.
Colluding with others who are all feeling the same desperation.
Wednesday is a confused child. Why was I so keen to come to school?
Seeing friends is great but the rest - having to obey every rule.
Still we're half way through, not long to the weekend, there may be cause for hope
Until we get in trouble for making off with the girls' skipping rope.
Thursday is a contrite child, the best day of the week is approaching.
Behave yourself, be good for two days, don't want anything encroaching
on how I might spend my Saturday so a different child is seen.
Look Miss I've eaten all my sprouts and all my peas, everything that's green.
Friday is a planning child, arrangements being made for the next day
The usual gang will be meeting up, pocket money ready - yaay.
But wait trust the teachers to spoil it by setting loads of homework.
Weekends are for us, not school. Why do they always give it with a smirk?
Saturday is a joyful child, no cares, the pictures, cafe and park.
Staying out with friends all day, home just before it's starting to go dark.
Then it's over and I have nothing to look forward to tomorrow.
The freedom I had when I was five now seems such a long time ago.
