THE DRAWING LESSONS

The teacher has arranged random things on the table haphazardly
for us to commit to paper and remember, draw what you see.
A courgette, a pepper, seven plastic cups and wellington boots.
I sit and stare trying to work out each articles attributes.

Don't hover with the pencil, begin by drawing your first ellipse
then more, different sizes. Soon it looks like the apocalypse.
I have to rescue this work without resorting to a rubber.
Is there an inner artist I may be about to discover?

I must resist the strong urge to go back and forth with the pencil.
Keep it in the paper, be bold, be confident and soon you will
be drawing what is there then you can start putting in depth and shade.
Acquainting yourself with using pencils of a different grade.

It's just a shame the pepper looks like some mutant variety.
It will never get on the shelves, rejected by society.
When the third lesson comes round there are definite signs of green shoots.
No need to draw any more. A masterpiece - my wellington boots.
