Lost But Found
Born 1990, M, from Blantyre, Malawi
LOST BUT FOUND
By Mike Kaupembe
Picketing for the last subway on Christmas Eve in Tokyo,
A chilly chaotic scene unfolds.
Like Friday evening buses from Blockbuster to Kachere back home
The crowd struggles frantically
Yet, amidst the turmoil, I carve a path,
Squeezing into a full to the brim car.
One misstep, and I'll be left stranded,
Forced to rummage for alternative routes home.
Home? – my rented apartment actually,
In this land of the free?
Where age, color, and creed fade into oblivion at least,
And survival is the sole currency.
I push through, relieved to reach my door,
Only to realize my wallet's gone,
Containing cash, residence card, and all my valuables.
Panic sets in, my mind racing.
But then, Christmas morning's unexpected gift:
The doorbell rings, a young man in uniform stands,
Handing me my wallet, intact, with a gentle smile.
Ohayou Gozaimasu!
