Random Ingredients
The report came into the squad room around one p.m. Head detective, Emily Clark, took the call. A homeless person had reported finding a bag of human remains. Emily, who had been on the force for almost ten years, had seen a lot, still, what she saw in that bag surprised her; the parts weren’t from one person, but from several.
“Jesus!” exclaimed Clark’s partner, Jim Cabel, when he saw the remains, “it’s like a stew of random ingredients.”
The reference to food made Emily grimace. “I wouldn’t call it a stew,” she remarked. Then turning to the other cops, commanded, “Continued checking the area for more clues before you bring the bag to the precinct.”
Back in the office, Emily and Jim checked with Missing Persons. Once they came up with several names, they began interviews. Eventually, they were able to connect several missing individuals to the body parts, but no direct connection between the missing and each other. But something Jim had said about stew kept nagging at Emily. That’s what eventually led the both of them to a local Hungarian restaurant and the crazed killer.
“Something tells me I’m going to stop eating meat,” Emily remarked, as they escorted the food-stained suspect away from the restaurant.
“Not me,” replied Cabell smiling. “I like a good 12 once steak along with a side of celery sticks stuffed with peanut butter and mushrooms.”
“Yuk!” exclaimed Clark.
