Two Mites
Born 1945, M, from Farmersburg, United StatesIn her prayer, Abagail heard The Lord say. “What do you have?” She lifted tear-filled eyes. He had spoken to her before. Not in a loud voice, but she still heard Him. Stepping to the shelf hammered in the wall, she picked up the two mites. Her stomach growled. She had skipped the morning meal. Last night, for supper, she ate the last piece of bread. If The Lord required this. She would have nothing left.
There was only her. Her son, a child of five, died last year. Her husband dead two years next month. The tears had almost stopped for her husband when her little boy sickened and died. As he lay dying, he pointed to the corner of the room. “Look mommy I see angels. Oh, they’re so bright. Do you see them? Do you see th…?” A smile lit his tiny face. She wept, laying her head on his chest. In the morning, they buried her little boy.
Now The Lord asks for all she had. She looked out her window. She smiled as the children gathered in a circle around this man they called Jesus. On his lap was a little boy. His little voice carried to her. “And you know what, Jesus? The child said.
“What my child?” Jesus said, smiling at the little boy.
“My daddy chased the donkey all day long.” The boy laughed.
Jesus laughed. He called each child by name. Then told the children a story. “And the fisherman caught nothing. He heard a voice in his head saying, try again. He was tired, he had fished all-night. But because he trusted The Lord and because he hated to give up, he cast out his nets one more time. And you know what?” He looked around the circle. His eyes settled on a little boy about 10 years old. “David, you tell us what happened.”
The little boy named David smiled. “He got a whole bunch of fish.”
”That’s right and all because he trusted The Lord.” Jesus said. The children laughed.
Abagail turned away. “Alright Lord, if that’s what you want, I will trust you.” Putting on her shawl, she left her home with the two mites clutched in her right hand. At the temple, she stood back from the treasury and watched a very wealthy man approach. He pulled a leather bag from his robes. Opening it, he withdrew several gold coins and tossed them into the place of offerings. Abagail watched as others did the same. Finaly when it looked like everyone was gone, she threw in her two mites hoping no one saw her give so little.
Hearing a scraping of feet, she lifted her eyes to Jesus. He smiled. Smiling, she nodded to him. Then, hurrying out of the temple, she returned to her home. As Abagail opened the door, she saw a cruse of olive oil on the table and an empty vessel setting beside it. She remembered the story of Elijah. Closing the door, she hurried to her neighbors. With in an hour, she had gathered many vessels of all sizes and shapes. She asked an oil merchant to come to her home. He reluctantly agreed. When he saw the quantity of oil, he rushed away and returned with many men. He paid Abagail the equivalent of 5 years’ wages for a working man. That night Abagail ate very well. In the next few weeks, Abagail became a follower of Jesus Christ.

09/14/2024Silly me. I had to look up what Mites were back then. I spent the whole story wondering why the Lord wanted her bugs! Good story!
