Alone birds
Born 1976, M, from Delhi, IndiaIt was raining outside. Sitting on a chair Ravi was watching the rain through the window. Today was Sunday and he had nothing else to do. He used to watch and listen to the pitter-patter of the rain in his spare time. All of a sudden his eyes fell on a bird that was sitting on a twig of jasmine tree. Seeing this bird, a smile came on his face. He had been seeing this bird for many years. It used to come from nowhere with the arrival of the monsoon and depart with the departure of the monsoon. Ravi didn't know which bird it was. The bird looked like a magpie- Robin so Ravi gave it the name Robin. Ravi said, "Welcome Mr. Robin. You are here once again." And he waved his hand to Robin.
Ravi was a forty years old unmarried man. He was alone having no family or relatives. He lived alone in a house with a beautiful garden. Robin used to come to his garden every monsoon. Robin used to search its food in Ravi's garden. Ravi found it almost every day playing in his garden during the monsoon season. This created a bond between Ravi and Robin. Ravi used to think about Robin that it was an alone bird having no mate. Always wandering alone just like him. Ravi always wondered why Robin came alone, why Robin didn't make a nest, why Robin came to only his garden. Perhaps the reason behind it was both of them were alone in this crowded world and he came to see him.
One night, it was heavy raining with lightning and thundering outside and Ravi was trying to sleep in his room. All of a sudden it came to his mind how Robin would spend the night in such heavy rainfall and lightning. He said to himself, "I should keep Robin with me as a pet." he planned to buy a cage for Robin.
The next morning Ravi went to his garden to see Robin and found Robin dead on the wet soil under the Jasmine tree. Seeing this, Ravi was in shock for a while. He began to stare at Robin's dead body. Warm tears came out of his eyes. The warmness of the tears was sending a chill to his heart. He began feeling alone. A thought came to him that perhaps he, too, would pass away one day like Robin.
Days and months passed and the next monsoon came. One Sunday morning, Ravi was watching drizzling outside through the window. He was alone. All of a sudden he heard the fluttering of wings coming from the jasmine tree. He looked there and found a bird among the leaves. The bird was of the same species as the Robin. The bird looked at him. Ravi said, "Welcome, Robin."

09/14/2024It is a wonderful story with a great lesson. If only Robin had a partner maybe he wouldn't have died so early. I think the bird's death should signal Ravi to find a partner at 40. Thank you for sharing!

09/14/2024Thank you for reading my story.
When I began to write this story, the idea of motivating Ravi to find a partner was in my mind but later I changed my idea. Sometimes one is in such a condition that one can't think of finding a partner.
