Her Life(Marla) “Heather?” The customer asked as Heather finished scanning the few grocery items.

“Yes, Mrs. Pike. I thought that was you. How have you been?”

“Oh, fine. Just back to this part of the country for a little visit.”

“That’s good.”

Mrs. Pike said, “So, you never really went anywhere, huh? A shame. You could have done so much with yourself.”

Heather ignored the jab and smiled at Mrs. Pike as she would anyone else. “I hope you enjoy your visit, Mrs. Pike,” she said with sincerity and kindness.

Mrs. Pike gave a nod and left the store.

A few days later, Heather was killed in an accident. Mrs. Pike was in her hotel room when she saw the news. She shook her head. “That girl could have really done something special with her life. What a pity that she chose to stay in this little town and settle for a grocery store job," she said aloud as she stared at the screen.

It wasn’t until she was back home again that she saw the obituary online. She could hardly believe what she was reading. Apparently, the entire town had dearly loved Heather. She was described as selfless and as someone who could be relied on to help anyone. She’d given up a music scholarship to take care of her sick grandmother, her only relative and who had raised her. After her grandmother passed away, Heather had worked at the grocery store. She had been a favorite among both customers and coworkers. She had also volunteered at the shelter. On Sundays, she had played her violin at the elderly care center. The obituary ended with something about how full and meaningful Heather’s short life had been.

Mrs. Pike sat back in her chair, realizing fully that she had been so wrong in her judgment.
