I love my mom. I think about her all the time— she even visits me in my dreams.
“Good morning mom! How are you doing?”
[…]
“Are you tired? That's fine. Guess what? Dad helped me get a job! Right dad?”
“Uh, yeah! Yeah… I did…”
“See mom? I'm going to be a barista! You always told me I’d be great at anything, now I get to show you!”
[…]
“I see that smirk ma’; don't worry, I'll do great; I can't fail— I won't… for you!”
“I’ll drive you there.”
“No, dad, you don't have to. I know you’re emotional because it’s my first job, but it's only a couple blocks away”
“Still… I'd prefer I take you, seeing as how…”
“Fine! See you later mom, get some sleep”
[…]
“Welcome to Coffee Cottage. I'm Emilia, your manager. If you have questions, just ask.”
“Thanks for hiring me! But I won't need help— I'm perfect at everything.”
“Yeah… of course, we've heard all about it.” She has quite the sympathetic smile, “Well, we’ll have you work the register. Think you can handle that?”
“No problemo! You can count on me.”
“Great, I’ll be in the back.”
“Capiche!”
“Hello, can somebody take my order?”
“Yes, sir! What’ll it be?”
“I’ll take a macchiato.”
“Coming right up! Hmm… how does this machine work again? Eh, I’ll figure it out.” With confidence, I pressed every button at once.
“What the hell is going on?” Emilia rushed over.
“Hello, manager! I got the machine to work. Mom’s going to be so proud!” Coffee sprayed everywhere.
“Yuck! This is nasty!”
“Yes, amazing, I know. Everybody looks so refreshed now!”
“You know what… why don’t you take a break outside. Don’t come back—you deserve it.”
“Wow, thanks! Mom’ll be so proud! See you tomorrow!”
“… I hope not.”
“Huh?”
“Dad, why are we in your car? I remember you picking me up, but from where?”
“I got called. You got fi…” He caught his words and sighed. “Nowhere special son.”
“Ah, ok. Um, hey! Have you finished getting me that job you told me about?”
“Um, no. They… weren't hiring anymore”
“That's too bad— I really wanted to show mom my flawless work ethic.”
“…”
“Hey, mom! I might get a job soon!”
[…]
“Oh… you're looking at dad, don't mind him, he's always cleaning that ugly vase. I don't get it, it's just filled with some powder. He looks sad when he’s with it.”
[…]
“Yeah, you're right. He should talk to you more. I always feel happy when you praise me.”
“Kid… please stop.” Dad was shaking.
“Why dad? Don’t you want to sit down and talk with us? Are you jealous of me? Mom always does praise me— I haven't seen her do that to you recently.”
“You ain't talking with nobody.”
“Huh? What do you mean? Why are you crying?”
“Yer crying too.”
“No, I’m not! I don’t cry. I’m perfect… mom said so— right, mom?”
There's no one at the other side of the table.

10/19/2024This is such an unusual and interesting piece. I was pulled around a lot trying to understand your character. I think that you did an excellent job of telling their point of view.
