Embracing the Joy of Everyday Tasks
Born 1952, M, from West Bengal, IndiaEmbracing the Joy of Everyday Tasks
I embrace every responsibility I take on. I never look down on any task, regardless of how small or insignificant it may appear.
My Friend’s Message
I once read a message from a dear friend, where he candidly described his days filled with what some might call "odd jobs"—tasks often delegated to others or considered the domain of women. He shared how he performed these jobs even when away from home. His honesty struck me deeply, as it resonated with my own experience. In many circles, these tasks might be seen as beneath someone of "status," but I have come to realise they are a source of balance, discipline, and, above all, a healthy and joyful practice.
My Daily Routine
My day starts early with prayers and a dose of homeopathic medicine on an empty stomach. Afterward, I move on to cleaning my room, accompanied by the soothing melodies of Rabindra Sangeet on the radio. These songs provide a meditative calm as I dust, vacuum, and organise, paying special attention to areas under the bed and sofa—often overlooked spots where dust and disorder tend to gather. For me, cleaning is not just about maintaining tidiness but fostering a space where the mind can relax, free from distractions. I firmly believe that there is no higher calling than performing one’s duties with perfection and care, setting an example for others to follow.
Scavenging
Scavenging, one of the less glamorous chores, teaches me humility and responsibility. There is no better reminder of the waste we all generate than being the one to collect it. It grounds me in the reality that even small actions contribute to a larger whole.
Washing Dishes
Washing dishes has become one of my favourite rituals. There is something deeply satisfying about transforming a sink filled with dirty dishes into a gleaming, orderly space. The warm water and the rhythmic motion of scrubbing are oddly soothing—like wiping away the debris of the day.
Cloth Washing
Manual cloth washing, followed by a machine rinse, requires more effort, but there’s something primal and fulfilling about the physical labor. I like to think of it as a workout for both body and soul. When the machine hums to life, I feel a sense of accomplishment, knowing I have earned that moment of relaxation.
Terrace Upkeep
The terrace—my sanctuary—often requires a good cleaning. Sweeping away fallen leaves or scrubbing accumulated dirt keeps me connected to nature. My roof garden, too, demands attention. Pruning, watering, and nurturing the plants is more than maintenance; it is a form of therapy. Watching life bloom under my care reminds me of the value of patience and consistency.
Pet Care
Then there’s my dog—my loyal companion. Caring for her, from feeding to grooming, is not merely a responsibility; it’s a privilege. Her wagging tail and affectionate eyes are daily reminders of unconditional love, bringing joy even to my busiest moments. From waking us early in the morning to curling up beside us at night, she faithfully obeys and provides us with enchanting companionship. She is a testament to how an ordinary animal can become an extraordinary, loyal friend.
Furniture Cleaning
Furniture cleaning rounds out my routine. The feel of a freshly polished table and the sight of a spotless chair are the final touches to a home that feels lived in and cared for.
Regularly rearranging furniture to create new layouts provides a great opportunity to enhance the interior design and maintain a higher level of cleanliness and organisation.
Cooking
Beyond writing, I find solace in the culinary arts. I occasionally venture into the kitchen to prepare meals, ranging from simple to elaborate dishes. There's a profound satisfaction in serving food crafted with my own hands, a tangible manifestation of care and love for myself and others.
One of my greatest joys is tea making. I take immense pride in maintaining impeccable cleanliness and adhering to precise procedures to brew tea that is both flavorful and aromatic. The art of tea making is a meditative experience, allowing me to connect with the senses and create a soothing atmosphere for all who partake.
Staying Grounded & Creative
In all these chores—often considered mundane or menial—I’ve found a quiet strength and a way to stay grounded in a world that often encourages us to delegate, disconnect, and detach. These tasks, far from diminishing my “status,” have enriched my life, teaching me humility, perseverance, love, and, above all, the benefits of a healthy routine. I am deeply indebted to my friend for inspiring this reflection and for encouraging me to build this story with my creative mind. I hope this serves as a tribute to him, as well as to the values I hold dear.
