Born 2006, F, from Lahore, PakistanEmma trudged wearily towards her house, her steps heavy with exhaustion after missing the bus. The weight of the day seemed to press down on her with every heartbeat, urging her forward. Finally, reaching her doorstep, she fumbled for her keys, the jangle of metal against metal seeming to echo in the quiet evening. As she entered and locked the door behind her, the silent embrace of her empty home enveloped her. She almost felt as though the walls themselves were watching, waiting for something to happen.
Desperate for some semblance of normalcy, she began the ritual of making coffee, the familiar rumble of the coffee maker serving as a comforting background noise. But as she stood in the kitchen, lost in her thoughts, a haunting voice penetrated the stillness, "Hi, Emma." Her heart skipped a beat as she turned, only to find no one there. Startled, she hesitated for a moment before shaking her head and dismissing it as exhaustion playing tricks on her mind. "I'm tired, but I'll be fine. I'm going to sleep," she replied to the empty room, before retreating to her room and collapsing onto her bed, seeking solace in the oblivion of sleep.
In the depth of night, when the world seemed to hold its breath, the door creaked open, and a presence, unseen and unfelt, entered her room. Though Emma was on the brink of slumber, she stirred as she felt a gentle weight and warmth enveloping her, as if a protective embrace had been bestowed upon her. As her consciousness slipped away, she could have sworn she heard a soft, whispered "goodnight" before the presence vanished into the shadows.
The morning sun filtered through the window, awakening Emma from her restless slumber. She blinked, trying to shake off the remnants of her strange dreams. As she began her morning routine, a voice greeted her with a cheerful "good morning," and yet once again, she found herself alone in the room. She nodded absently, feeling a hint of disquiet as she hurriedly changed her clothes, feeling as though her movements were being silently observed. Breakfast was laid out on the table, as if anticipating her every need, a scene that left her with a sense of bewilderment.
With no time to dwell on the strange occurrences, she hastily grabbed a slice of bread and darted out the door, the disembodied voice bidding her goodbye as she left, causing her to pause for just a moment, unsure if her mind was playing tricks on her once more.
In the confines of her office, while immersed in her daily tasks, the surreal encounters from the past day continued to haunt her thoughts. The unexplained voice seemed to reverberate through her mind, each utterance clawing at her consciousness. "Hi Emma, good morning, goodbye," the phrases played on a loop, invading her thoughts with a sense of unease.
Abruptly, she looked up from her work with a vexing sigh, a question lingering on her lips. "Wait a minute... but... 10/26/2024Scary and intriguing and thought provoking. I had to scan back and forth a bit to be sure I was getting it correctly. I was surprised by the ending, though. It seemed to be going a different direction with her acceptance of the occurrences. What a twist.
I'm glad to see you branching out into the spirit of the season.
