Unwanted Guest

By Lily
Born 1994, F, from KL, Malaysia

Unwanted Guest

It was mid-May when I enrolled in a diploma program in accountancy at a college far from home, in a different city known for its historic charm. Everything was new and exciting, and as an 18-year-old, I fell in love with the place at first sight. I was assigned to a hostel in the heart of the city, which was perfect for exploring local food spots and other entertainment.
My hostel was a 14-story apartment building, so clean and tidy. I stayed on the ground floor with ten other girls in one unit. My housemates were from different cities and studying in different faculties, and we had a lot of fun during those first few weeks. But then things slowly began to change. Five of my housemates wanted to move to another unit due to some paranormal disturbances. At first, I thought it was absurd until I saw handprints on their backs every morning when they woke up. Even then, I kept denying that anything paranormal was happening in the house. Eventually, those girls managed to move out, but before they left, they warned the five of us who stayed behind not to remain in that unit.
That same night, after the girls left, I began to feel something strange. My room was the first one near the doorway, and I clearly heard someone turn the doorknob and enter the house, walking down the hall to the last room. At first, I thought it was one of the girls coming back to retrieve something they’d forgotten. But then I remembered I had locked the front door at 10 p.m., and now it was 12:15 a.m. Confused but determined, I gathered the courage to step out of my room and check.
The front door was still closed and locked. But when I looked down the hallway, I saw a dark, shadowy figure slipping into the last room the one those girls had just vacated. A chilling sense of dread crept over me.
Life was never the same after that incident. Since that night, we decided not to go into or use the last room. No matter how many times we switched off the light in there, somehow it would turn back on after midnight. Every night, I heard her calling my name, yes, HER!. Whenever I was alone, I could feel her presence. I was sleep deprived.
Then, one night, I came home at 3 a.m. after a party and went to brush my teeth before bed. As I brushed, I saw my friend leaving my room and heading toward the last room. Confused, I wondered why she was going there at that hour. So, I called out and asked what she was doing. She turned, looked at me, and gave me a deathly glare that left me frozen. Then, just before she entered the last room, she turned back and flashed me a chilling smile.
Thinking she was playing a prank I finished my nightly routine and went back to my room. But to my shock, the friend I’d seen walking to the last room was there, sound asleep, as if she’d never left. I clearly remembered that she hadn’t come back out. But, ignoring my feelings, I went to bed.
The next day, when I tried to ask her about what happened, she insisted she had never left the room that night. I was shocked and confused. Then… who did I see last night?
