My First Bullet
Born 1993, M, from Tamilnadu, IndiaIn the small, rundown jail on the outskirts of the city, the atmosphere was always tense. The prisoners, locked up in their cells, waited for the darkness to come. For them, it was a time of rest, a time to escape the harsh reality of their confinement. But for the guards, it was a time of vigilance, a time to ensure that no one tried to escape or cause trouble.
On one particular night, a new guard, Jimmy Carson, made his rounds, checking each cell and making sure everything was in order. As he walked down the rows of cells, he noticed one prisoner sitting in the corner, hunched over a small diary, writing something.
Jimmy, being the strict guard he was, immediately knocked on the cell door and demanded to know what the prisoner was doing. But to his surprise, there was no response. Frustrated, he shouted at the prisoner to put down the diary and go to bed. Still, there was no reply. Just then, another guard, who had been on the job for much longer, came by and informed Jimmy that the prisoner was deaf. Feeling foolish, Jimmy moved on to check the other cells.
The next day, as he made his rounds once again, Jimmy found himself in front of the same cell. This time, he threw his lathi through the bars and instructed the prisoner, named Alex, to give him the diary before going to bed. And to his surprise, Alex responded, asking him to repeat what he had said in sign language. Jimmy, who had learnt sign language as a child, was able to communicate with Alex and ask him about the story he was writing in his diary.
Alex, with tears in his eyes, explained that it was the story of why he had killed his father. As Alex's story unfolded, Jimmy was drawn into a world of cruelty, love, and tragedy. It was a story of Alex's father, John, a weapon smuggler, and his relationship with his childhood friend, Michael, who was also deaf and dumb. Despite their love for each other, John's homophobic and violent nature had torn them apart.
Alex had been living with his father and enduring his abuse. But one day Michael came to Alex's home to see him. Alex was not there, but Alex's father called Michael, and he warned him. But Michael tries to explain their relationship through sign language. John didn't hear that and said, Just leave my son. Then Michael said, "I won't leave Alex anymore." John had brutally beaten Michael.
Alex rushed in to protect his friend, but John pulled him away and began to beat Michael mercilessly. In a desperate attempt to stop his father, Alex opened the side table drawer, where he saw his father's revolver. Without thinking, he grabbed the gun and shot his father, saving Michael's life. As John lay on the ground, crying and bleeding, Alex and Michael embraced, both knowing that their lives would never be the same.
The police arrived and arrested Alex, sending him to jail for his crimes. Touched by the heart-wrenching story, Jimmy gave the diary to Alex and smiled. Then Alex said that was "MY FIRST BULLET."
The weight of the past hung heavy in the air as Alex retreated to his bed, his thoughts drifting to Michael and the haunting memory of his father. As Jimmy walked away, the echoes of the forbidden love story reverberated in the stillness of the prison, a haunting reminder of the mysteries that lay hidden behind the cold, unyielding walls. From that day on, Jimmy made sure to check on Alex every day.

11/18/2024Not all 'criminals' are evil. Governments lock people up because it is easy, not because it is just. I'm for the truly bad people being kept away from harming the rest of us, but who gets to say who is truly bad?
This was a good story.
