Luna stared at the Earth which was a blue and green orb floating in space. Just moments ago, Luna and her father landed on the moon with a crash, spilling moondust and moonstones everywhere. The trip to the moon was horribly disastrous and painful. But before landing on the moon, Luna and her father were sitting on their comfy bed back on Earth, telling stories. Father was telling a story about a girl who met her dead mother on the moon when Luna piped up, "Dad. Do you think I'll ever fly to space to visit Mom?"
Father hesitated before saying, "Of course, sweetie. Nothing's impossible if you do it with your heart. But it's just that it's too hard..."
"But you just said nothing's impossible" Luna whined, "Come on Dad... Why don't we fly to the moon now? I want to see Mom!"
"Yes sweetie, but you need to rent a spaceship to fly to the moon!" Father reasoned, "And renting a spaceship is freakin' expensive! It'll take you forever to get all the money needed to rent a spacecraft!"
"So why not we use our imagination, Dad?"
Father's face lit up. He suddenly wrapped his stumpy hands around his daughter and lifted her up.
"Gahhh! My little astronaut daughter's going to space! Bravo!"
Luna was tossed around, screaming with laughter as she pretended to fly to the moon. It was great fun!
"Captain Luna Yu speaking here" Luna announced, "We're gonna blast off in 10, 9, 8, 7, 6-"
"5! 4! 3! 2! 1! BLAST OFF!" Father and Luna both said in unison as Father lifted his daughter high into the air, pretending to fly.
"We're at the moon!" Luna said a while later, "Captain Luna here! We're going to land on the moon! Prepare to land!"
Father gently let his daughter down on his bed while Luna looked on in pride.
"We have landed!" Luna said, stepping on the bed, "I'm so proud to announce that I'm the first woman on the moon!"
Father clapped as Luna bowed gracefully. Luna took a great leap and just before she could fall back down on the bed, Father caught her and threw her out from the window!
"Father!" Luna cried, "You want to kick me out?!"
"No!" Father laughed, "Fly with me!"
Luna looked down at her feet. Her feet were no longer touching the dewy grass! She swooped happily and saw her Father giggling to see the look of amazement on her face. Father held her hand and both of them flew into the dark sky, speckled with stars. The moon hung there, shining brighter than ever.
Both daughter and father flew up, their eyes gazing at their destination, eyes looking determined to arrive.
Just as they flew beyond the exosphere, Luna shivered.
"Dad... How long later are we gonna get there?"
"Not long later" Dad reassured, "Are you cold, sweetie?"
"No Dad, I'm fine"
They flew and flew, admiring the space wonders flying around them. They saw the sun, shining behind them. They saw ahead of them were Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, all orbiting the sun. This couldn't be more perfect, flying to the moon with her Father while admiring the realms of space.
Just moments before they reached the moon, space rocks were starting to target them at a speed. Father and Luna tried their best to avoid, but a particularly large rock smacked Luna's shaggy face with all its might, knocking her out cold.
"Luna! Luna! Wake up! We're nearly there!" Father cried, wading through the chaotic space rocks, "Hold on... Hold on..."
Father held his daughter's hand tighter than ever before reaching his foot out to meet the moon's surface. He laid his daughter in a comfortable position before sitting down at his daughter's side, hoping Luna was okay.
Just as Father was about to make the decision to go back home, a mystical, disembodied voice rang out.
"Welcome Alien. Glad you're here"
Father looked surprised, "I'm not an alien" he screamed, "I'm just a human who wants to visit the moon! Who are you?!"
The voice laughed and said, "I'm the guard of the moon, ensuring every critter and every bit on the moon is safe. So what brings you here, human?"
"I don't want to let my daughter down. She got a dream of visiting the moon. So I decided to visit along with her! Please leave us alone! We won't cause any harm!"
There was an eerie silence. It was unpleasing and uncomfortable. Wanting to break the silence, the voice called out,
"I trust you, human. I will let your daughter visit the moon and fulfill her dream with one condition"
"Tell me. I will do anything to not let my daughter down" Father said heroically
"To grant your daughter's wish of visiting the moon, you will have to hand me over... your life" the voice said, and just before Father can interrupt, the voice continued, "As I'm the guard of the moon, I have to stay immortal. But I don't drink ambrosia to stay immortal, so every year, I need to take one's life. And it seems like I'm taking yours this year, else, your daughter and you will have to go back"
"Okay... Just take me. I would even sacrifice for the love of my daughter and for the fulfilment of my daughter's dreams. Goodbye, world. Goodbye, my sweetie"
Father stood there. Moments later, wisps of mist came soaring out from him and into the realms of space. The more mist flew out, the weaker and paler Father became, until when all his life was drained, he slumped to the surface of the moon, weakened.
Not long later, Luna woke up to see her Father, lying on the moon dust. Luna looked around. She was really on the Moon. She couldn't help.
"Dad! We did it! We landed on the Moon!"
No reply
Luna walked over to her Father and tears started to trickle down her cheeks when she saw her Father lying withered and weakened on the ground.
"Father!"
Father smiled weakly, "Luna... I just gave the guards of the moon my life for you to discover the moon and be the first girl on the moon... Make me proud. I won't live. Go on without me. I'm fine and it's finally time for me to go... Goodbye, my sweet daughter. You will always make me proud..."
Father's eyes closed. Luna started to cry as she saw her Father turning slowly into moon dust. Luna cried out loud before attempting to scoop her Father's moon dust up.
"Father!"
There, Luna sat, her eyes staring into space. She finally got her dreams, but lost one very important thing: the love from her Father.
He had died to grant Luna's dreams. He had showered her with so much love. And now, he's gone forever. Luna stared at the pile of moon dust in her hand.
"Father... I will always try to make you proud... I will do anything for your satisfaction."
Luna stored her Father's moon dust in her pocket, looking at the Earth mournfully. Her dream had come true. But her grief has also come true at the same time...

12/01/2024This is a beautiful story. I love how the father supports Lunar and the fun they have together. It shows the importance of the relationship between the child and the father and how fathers can go out of their way to support their children in achieving their dreams. Thank you for sharing!

11/25/2024Children rarely understand the love of a parent until they become a parent themselves. I just hope Luna knows the way home when she is done on the moon! Lots of emotion in this story!
