My Last Happiness
Born 2005, M, from Lagos, NigeriaMy Last Happiness
Once upon a time, in a small village nestled in the rolling hills of the countryside, there lived a young boy named Jack. Jack lived with his parents in a cozy little house on the outskirts of the village. His parents were loving and kind, and they provided for all of Jack's needs.
Jack's childhood was idyllic. He spent his days playing in the fields and forests surrounding the village, exploring the world around him with wide-eyed wonder. His parents were always there to support him, to encourage him, and to comfort him when he was sad or scared.
Tragedy struck one fateful day when Jack was just 10 years old. His mother was involved in a terrible accident on her way home from the market. Jack's father was devastated by the loss of his beloved wife, and he sank into a deep depression.
As the days turned into weeks, Jack's father became increasingly withdrawn. He would spend hours locked away in his room, unable to face the world outside. Jack tried to reach out to him, to comfort him, but his father just pushed him away.
Eventually, Jack's father was diagnosed with a mental health condition, and he began to receive treatment. With time, patience, and support, he slowly began to recover.
However, Jack's father's recovery was not without its challenges. He began to feel lonely, and he eventually met a woman named Sarah who was eager to fill the void left by Jack's mother. They got married, and Sarah moved into the little house on the outskirts of the village.
At first, Jack tried to make the best of the situation. He attempted to be friendly and welcoming to his new stepmother, but she was cold and distant towards him. She would often criticize him, belittle him, and make him feel worthless.
As time went on, Jack's father became increasingly oblivious to the way Sarah was treating his son. He was so grateful to have someone to share his life with that he ignored the warning signs.
Sarah gave birth to a baby girl, and as the girl grew up, she became a miniature version of her mother. She would often bully and tease Jack, and Sarah would do nothing to stop her.
One day, when Jack was 16 years old, his stepsister accused him of doing something he didn't do. She told her mother and Jack's father that Jack had slept with her, and they believed her.
Without hesitation, Jack's father threw him out of the house, telling him that he never wanted to see him again. Jack was devastated. He had never felt so alone, so rejected, and so unloved.
With a heavy heart, Jack left the village and started a new life in the city. He worked hard, studied hard, and eventually became a successful businessman.
But despite his outward success, Jack couldn't shake off the feeling of sadness and loss that had been weighing him down for so long. He felt like a part of him had been ripped away, and he didn't know how to get it back.
Years went by, and Jack received some devastating news. He had cancer, and the doctors told him that he only had a month to live.
With a sense of urgency, Jack knew that he had to go back to the village and confront his past. He had to see his father, to tell him the truth about what had happened all those years ago.
As Jack returned to the village, he felt a mix of emotions. He was scared, anxious, and uncertain about what the future held. But he was also determined to make things right, to clear his name, and to find some measure of closure.
When Jack arrived at his childhood home, he was met with a mixture of shock and sadness. His father was old and frail now, but his eyes still sparkled with a deep love for his son.
Jack told his father everything, from the lies that his stepsister had told to the way that Sarah had treated him. He told him about the pain, the sadness, and the struggle that he had endured for so long.
But as Jack finished his story, he realized that his father wasn't reacting the way that he had expected. Instead of anger, outrage, or regret, his father just looked at him with a deep sense of sadness and loss.
"I'm so sorry, Jack," his father said, his voice trembling with emotion. "I was blind, deaf, and dumb. I didn't see what was happening, and I didn't protect you. Can you ever forgive me?"
Jack was taken aback by his father's words. He had expected anger, defensiveness, or even denial. But instead, his father was taking responsibility, apologizing, and asking for forgiveness.
As Jack looked into his father's eyes, he felt a weight lift off his shoulders. He felt a sense of peace, of closure, and of forgiveness.
"I forgive you, Dad," Jack said, his voice filled with emotion. "I forgive you, and I love you."
As Jack hugged his father, he felt a sense of relief wash over him. He had finally found closure, and he had finally forgiven his father.
But as they pulled back, Jack's father noticed that something was off. Jack looked pale, and his eyes seemed sunken.
"Jack, what's wrong?" his father asked, his voice filled with concern.
Jack took a deep breath before speaking. "Dad, I have something to tell you. I've been diagnosed with cancer, and the doctors say I only have a month left to live."
His father's face fell, and he looked like he had been punched in the gut. "No, Jack, no," he whispered, shaking his head.
Jack smiled weakly. "It's okay, Dad. I'm at peace. I just wanted to come back and see you, to tell you the truth about what happened all those years ago."
His father nodded, tears streaming down his face. "I'm so proud of you, Jack. You're strong, brave, and kind. I'm honored to be your father."
As the days went by, Jack's condition deteriorated rapidly. His father took care of him, nursing him back to health as much as possible.
One day, as Jack lay in bed, his father holding his hand, he smiled weakly.
"Dad, I'm glad I came back," Jack said, his voice barely above a whisper.
His father squeezed his hand. "Me too, son. Me too."
With those final words, Jack closed his eyes, a peaceful smile on his face. His father held him close, tears streaming down his face as he whispered, "I love you, Jack. I'll always love you."
As the sun set over the village, Jack's father held his lifeless body, rocking him back and forth as he mourned the loss of his beloved son.
But even in death, Jack's face remained peaceful, a smile still etched on his lips. He had found closure, forgiveness, and love, and he had died with a sense of relief and peace.

12/12/2024A sad and happy story. I'm glad that Jack was able to reconsile with his father before it was too late. You did a good job of telling out step families sometimes, but not everytime evolve. I've know both happy and disrupted families, and it does usually boil down to how the parents behave with the children. Well done.
