Nathan Longfield
Born 1951, M, from Elliot Lake, Ontario., CanadaNathan Longfield shuffled into the kitchen quietly. His mother turned toward him. She smiled. It was not a warm smile. I was not cold either. It was a smile a person uses when they are trapped with no way to escape.
Years later, Nathan had matured, shaped by the complexities of his childhood. He often visited his mother, who was now in a nursing home. The place was clean and quiet, but the sterile surroundings contrasted sharply with the life his mother had once lived.
As Nathan walked down the corridor, he passed other residents, each absorbed in their own world of memories and loss. His steps were measured, as if he carried the weight of his past with each stride.
When he reached his mother's room, he paused for a moment, gathering himself. Entering, he found her sitting by the window, staring blankly outside. Her once vibrant eyes now seemed distant, lost in a haze of time.
"Hi, Mom," he said softly.
She turned her head slowly, her expression vacant at first. But as recognition dawned, a faint smile formed on her lips—a shadow of the smile she used to give him. It was neither warm nor cold, but it held a different kind of depth, a silent acknowledgment of their shared past.
Nathan took a seat beside her and gently held her hand. "I brought you some flowers," he said, placing a small bouquet of daisies on the table. Her fingers trembled as they touched the petals, and for a brief moment, a flicker of joy crossed her face.
They sat together in silence, words unspoken yet understood. The years had changed them both, but in this quiet moment, they found a fragile connection, a sense of peace amidst the echoes of their past.

01/19/2025A great story. It shows the importance of a mother's love and support in a boy's development. The resultant effect is a great bond forever as we see in this story.

01/18/2025This 'fictional' scenario is happening in real life around the world. Most of us will experience it ourselves, one way or another, at some point in our lives. Thanks for sharing this story, Donald. Happy short story star of the day.

01/07/2025Very poignant. As we age (i.e. I'm pushing eighty in a handful of months) these experiences become the norm, almost commonplace.

01/06/2025These are sad times, which can be made worse if the older person has lost their memories as well. The only silver lining is that, if they made it this far, they at least lived their life.
