The Door is Open
Born 1978, F, from Fort Worth, Texas, United States
The lyrics ring especially true during life’s hardest moments. One verse says, “Just give Life a chance, give love another try.” To me, it felt like God was saying, “Just give Me a chance. Open your heart to Me. Let Me be your friend, and let My love guide the way.”
This beautiful song has become one of my favorites—a rediscovered treasure. Whenever I need encouragement or a pick-me-up, I turn to this song and others like it that lift my spirit.
Recently, I’ve been on a roller coaster of emotions. My divorce left me feeling lost, and I often feel like the odd one out in my family. I’m still wrestling with inner struggles—trying to cope with or work through the many issues I carry.
Today, January 18, 2025, started like any other. I unloaded the dishwasher, made coffee for the coffee drinkers in the house, had breakfast, and chatted with my family. Later, I retreated to my room and checked my email. As I was sorting through messages, a friend reached out to me on Google Chat, sharing photos of pages from an inspirational book she was reading. I read the pages and felt a wave of calm wash over me. I sent her a heartfelt thank-you message.
Returning to my inbox, I opened a devotional email from The Upper Room. As I read the devotional, the calm feeling grew stronger, and suddenly, the lyrics to “The Door Is Open” began playing in my head. In that moment, I knew God was speaking to me, reminding me: “The door is always open. I am always here. You can yell, scream, cry, or even curse at Me, and I will still be here. The door to My presence is always open.”
Though I still struggle with self-doubt, often feel like I don’t belong, and question many aspects of my life, I cannot deny the comforting truth: God is always there. His door is always open, and His presence is constant.
