Sometimes people just need a hug.
Born 1951, M, from Wilmington NC, United States.jpeg)
“Do you know what’s wrong with her?”
Dot leaned over to take another peak at the poor girl sitting alone on the park bench. She shook her head, making her ears stand out.
“No, Duke. I don’t. She looks really sad though.”
“Maybe we should go over there, you know, see if we can help?”
This time Dot came around the tree that Duke and her had been sitting behind. She got a good view of the girl. Even though her eyesight wasn’t the best, she could tell the poor thing had been crying.
She could hear really well though, and she recognized the sniffles coming from the poor girl.
“Yes, I think we should. Let’s go.”
Shaking the leaves and brambles off, they both stood up to approach the girl on the bench. When they got closer they could see she had indeed been crying. Their hearts seem to break in unison. Their eyes grew wide and honest. Dot’s eyebrows rose up in what could only be called an invitation to tell her everything.
Duke put his head on the poor girl’s lap. Dot jumped up on the bench, her chin close enough to rest on the girl’s shoulder. The girl perked up instantly, a spark of curious joy came out as a quiet chuckle:
“Well, where did you two come from?”
With that, she started petting Duke’s head, and every time she stopped, one of his massive paws would gently touch her arm. She would laugh and start petting him again. Dot had crawled onto her lap, and was gently licking the girls neck and face. It made the girl smile. A lot.
And so they sat until the girl stood up and said:
“Thank you so much. You made my day! Now scoot! Go back to your owners. I know a cute couple like you have a home. Now go.”
Tails wagging, Duke and Dot weaved their way back through the park. If that girl could have read their minds, she would have been shocked at their words:
