SAYING I lOVE YOU ISN'T ALWAYS ENOUGH
Born 2009, F, from Abuja, Nigeria.jpeg)
I still remember the day I crossed paths again with the one person I once loved. We were no longer the starry-eyed lovers we once were, but old-time friends catching up over lunch.
As we sat together, he shared the news of his recent breakup with his fiancée. I felt a pang of sadness for him, and my heart went out. He reflected on the past, and I could see the regret in his eyes. He told me how he wished he had handled things differently, how he wished he had held on to me.
But life had moved on. I was now married to a man I loved dearly. As I looked at my former lover, I felt a mix of emotions: nostalgia, affection, and a hint of sadness. We had shared so many memories, and a part of me would always cherish those moments.
However, our past was complicated. He had become distant, and I was left feeling alone and uncertain. I remembered the countless times I had reached out to him, only to be met with silence or brief, dismissive responses. The pain and frustration still lingered, but I had long since accepted that our relationship had run its course.
As we parted ways, I couldn't help but think about what could have been. He wished he had been more present, more communicative, and more honest about his struggles. Perhaps then, our love story would have unfolded differently.
But it was too late now. I had moved on, and so should he. As I looked at him, I felt a sense of closure and a reminder that sometimes, love isn't enough. Sometimes, it takes effort, commitment, and vulnerability to make a relationship work.

03/18/2025As I this, I was reminded of an essay that I written about me and my former husband that I posted. It is true that saying "I love you" is not always enough. Wonderful story and congrats of Short Story of the Day.

03/18/2025Absolutely spot on and i have been in that situation before. Saying i love you alone will never work. There are so many things that needs to be done in between

03/09/2025Very good writing. The reader can grasp the emotions unfolding in this new/old relationship. Would you consider develping it as a short story, creative fiction? It's just a thought.

03/11/2025Kanu,
If you do, try to stretch it out as much as possible and take your time. Never rush. Say everything you ever wanted to say about the relationship and have fun writing it all down. Tell a first-rate story.
