"Backwater."
Born 1951, M, from Wilmington NC, United States
“You can’t go there.”
“Why not?”
“First, they don’t want you. Second, their Borders are Closed. They have been Closed for more than thirty years. Third, it is illegal all over the World to make contact with them. The Penalty for going there is …well, strict.”
Laughter from the other three teens staring across the barbed wire.
“What do you mean strict? The worst that could happen is they will tell us not to do it again!”
The fourth teenager spoke again:
“No you idiot. The World has a Law. Nobody goes in. Anybody that comes out is welcome. But if you go in of your own volition… the Penalty is harsh. “
“How harsh can it be?”
“You have to stay. Nobody will try and get you out. They do not negotiate at all. And from what I heard, they hate any kind of illegal immigration. And since there is no way to legally enter their country….who knows what they do to you.”
The laughter died down. A somber mood came over the four teens. A cloud of dust was moving along the Border. The teens watched…safe on their side of the Border.
The Vehicle was heavily armed and way out of date. That did not mean it wasn’t deadly. Especially to four kids just watching from the other side of the barbed wire. They all stood up and gathered in a group. They waved …they thought it was a friendly wave.
A machine gun tore a fifty meter trench…mere ten feet in front of them. They scattered like scared hens. The bullets were all on the other side of the Barbed wire. So no Borders were crossed.
The Teens heard the laugher coming from the vehicle, even a hundred yards away. They also heard one of the Border Patrol guys yell out:
“Stay away you Criminals. Cross that Border …and the next salvo is for you peasants.”
The four teens, still shuddering from facing the reality of the one Country in the World that cared only for itself - and hated everyone else. It had been more than 30 years since that country rearranged the Global alliances. And now, they were truly isolated. Cut off from the rest of the World.
The teens got on their air sleds. Lifting themselves more than a hundred meters in the air, they sped away at over 120 Klicks an hour. With their air flow skirts in place…so they could talk, and the wind didn’t knock them off their air sleds- they flew silently until the fourth teen spoke up what everyone was thinking:
“What a backwater."

04/18/2025Excellent work, sir. Deep message along with a delicate issue. I admire the language, the choice of the four teenagers and the type of threat they face. Very beautiful.
