The Love Switch

Chapter 1
It was a cold and crisp day, the snow crunched beneath my feet as I walked. Today was Carter's and my anniversary. Carter took me to a beautiful restaurant. I've grown accustomed to this restaurant and it's my favorite place ever. We walked in and took our seats. We met during highschool, when we were freshman, and ended up being highschool sweethearts. It's been magical ever since. A question caught me off guard
“Ma’am what would you like to drink?” I was blankley confused, I almost forgot.
“Right, I'm sorry,” I said, “I'll just have ag wine please”
The waiter walked away and my husband asked, “Are you okay?”
“Yes honey”
“Baby, stop worrying. This year will be the year.”
My heart dropped to my stomach. I was frozen in my body.

Chapter 2
When my husband said that it made me sick, to the point I wasn't hungry anymore. Carter said that because we've been trying for a baby since the first year of our marriage, I don't know why but there was no hesitation for us to start trying. It was just something we both knew we wanted but it just never worked out for us. The thing was, I was never told I couldn't have kids or that I couldn't conceive so I don't understand why it's so hard for us. We tried for months after our wedding, but every single damn test was negative. The point was I was devastated. A couple months after trying, we decided to go to the doctors. I remember exactly how it went. I walked in feeling cold, anxious, and most of all disgusted with myself. We waited in the waiting room and I could feel my heart beating just waiting for the doctor to come and get me. I swear it felt like ten years. Finally the doctor called me back, and we waited in the room for another ten minutes before we were seen. . When the doctor came into the room he could tell that I was very nervous
“Just relax Maddy,” The doctor told me.
He did the exam, and he told me it would take a couple days for the results, to think my anxiety was bad, it grew ten times worse in that moment. . I just had to go with it. These past two days had been nothing but torture, all I could think about was what the results could be. All I knew is that whatever the doctor says it will write out my whole life. The life I wanted to live my dream as an adult, or the complete opposite. I decided to receive a phone call instead of going back to the office, that place already raises the tension of being there.

Chapter 3
That's it, today is the day I found out if I can conceive a baby. I was really praying I wouldn't be infertile, maybe my eggs weren't strong enough but I'm praying my dream will come true. I always told myself it was just my body not being ready yet but that was just to keep me away from thinking bad. It was three o’clock in the afternoon and I received the call. Carter and I were in the kitchen, shaking with anxiety. I picked up my phone and the doctor started to say the words I did not want to hear. I sobbed. I dropped my phone and Carter just held me. The phone never hung up and the doctor heard all my crying and screaming.
“I'm sorry to say but the test came back positive.”
My whole world felt like it was falling apart, like the world was crumbling down into chunks. My hearing went quiet and my heartbeat was just getting faster and faster. Carter was there telling me it was okay, but I knew it wasn't. That was all my husband and I wanted and now it's not possible. After I pulled myself together, the first person I told was my sister. I eventually told my mom but I didn’t wanna tell her the news. I just felt like she would be upset with me. I told my other close friends here in town.
“I'm so sorry! But there are other options.” my friends would say.
I didn't care if there were “other” options. That was my dream. Being a parent. Hannah was the only one not to say something like that. She actually kept helping me through it. Hannah is my only sibling so we grew up pretty close, she knows everything about me and I know everything about her, she's my other half and I don't know what I would do without her. I thought she was my best friend.

Chapter 4
One week went by and since I found out the news, Hannah and I made a plan to go home to Missouri where my parents lived. Carter would stay here to watch the house and he wanted us to just have a girls’ trip. Both Hannah and I lived in Colorado and that's where we decided to move to after high school because of schooling and overall it’s just a beautiful place. Hannah even lived two blocks away from me. I get a text from Hannah the morning we were supposed to leave
“I can't come this weekend. I got a last minute job and I have to go to the meeting. Next time!”
I let it roll off my back, but in the back of my head I thought to myself something was going on. I said bye to Carter and headed out, once i made it to my parents house and I was in desperate need of them. They walked in and coddled me and made sure I was okay.
“I'm sorry Hannah couldn't come, she had a last minute job I guess?”
“It's okay honey, we just want you to be okay,” my mother replied.
I felt a little bit better knowing that I was home and had my parents with me. Later that day I tried to give a call to both Hannah and Carter and neither of them answered, okay something is definitely going on, normally they both answer right away. I was going to stay with my parents for a good solid three weeks just to decompress from everything that's happened, so I wanted to make sure things were good at the house but, with both of them not answering, that relaxation surely went away.
It's been a week since I came to my parents and carter and hannah have been really short with me not answering and overall just being weird to me until I received a text from Hannah
“Hey, I thought I should let you know I'm coming home tomorrow, my work cleared up! See you then.”
I was so excited to finally have some sister time, maybe she truly was busy with work the rest of the night was just being at home and answering work emails. I finally became exhausted and went to bed. What only seemed like a few hours of sleep I was woken up by the doorbell ringing, it was Hannah and Carter.

Chapter 5
“Carter! What are you doing here?”
I was dumbfounded. Why was my husband with my sister and didn't tell me he was coming too? All I could think was “Is this why Hannah couldn’t come and why Carter stayed home?”
“I wanted to surprise you!” Carter replied
It didn't sit right with me, knowing my husband he would've told me regardlessly. My sister walked through the door and said, “don't you wanna tell her the news?”
I looked at her with confusion. ”What news?”
I looked at Carter, he smiled at Hannah and looked at me “Hannah and I are gonna have a baby.”
I just looked at them both, I thought I was going crazy. “Did you just say baby?!” I knew my sister had been coming over a lot, and this explains why she was always at my house before I got home from work! Carter worked from home so he rarely left. I never was really suspicious of them because I thought I could test them
“There's no way my sister and my husband got together behind my back. And Carter, you got her pregnant! It’s been going on for this long?” I asked the question that I didn’t want the answer to.
“How far along are you Hannah?”
“Ten weeks.” Hannah said it with pure joy knowing it was hurting me.
My face was red. Carter just stared at me
“Maddy, what did you want me to do, not become a father? You didn't want to do any other option so, I resorted to my own thing”
“Carter I don’t care, that was my biggest dream.”
Hannah was just standing there looking at me with a smirk, she didn't care, I knew she didn't. I gave one final look at her and walked out of the house. My parents came rushing to me, they were doing lawn work the whole time this happened, they were so confused. I knew one thing though, I never wanted to see those two ever again.

Chapter 6
I spent the night at a hotel, I couldn't go back there so I met up with my parents to say goodbye and headed home to pack up Carter's stuff. All I could think of is why me, what did I do to deserve this. I got back to my house and packed up Carter's belongings, and put them into storage. I haven't given Hannah or Carter a single thought, they aren't worth my time, or so I thought. It’s been a few weeks and I’ve lost sleep over this. It feels so weird being the only one in this house, and not having a best friend. No husband, no sister, just me, myself, and I. I eventually found myself again after two months, but almost one year later I'm back to normal. It took everything in me not to call them, but I didn’t.
My parents sent me a text telling me to come home this weekend to meet my niece. I had to go, not for them but for me. To see what a child would like with his features. I headed home the day she texted me, I showed up and I was anxious to walk in. The first people I saw were them. Carter was holding their child, and she was an exact copy of him, baby blue eyes, dark tan skin, and chocolate brown hair. She was perfect. This was my first time seeing them since I found out she was pregnant, we didn't say one word. I said hi to my parents and left. I hated being there, seeing them having the baby in that house made me more upset. They are living my dream. So to my sister and her daughter I hope you love him… just as much as I did.
