School Cop Part 2
Born 1941, M, from Santa Clara, CA, United States
Burglary Number Two:
It was a Friday night, and I often had my number two son Clarke ride with me. I had just picked him up when I was advised of an alarm at Broadway Continuation School. I wasn't to concerned because our alarm system very seldom worked. With all the living things kept in the rooms the alarms were vulnerable to misreading the movement.
I pulled into the lot and told Clarke to stay with the car. The first building you come to is the cafeteria. I went to the door that leads to the kitchen. As I entered, I saw a male run out the other end. I notified radio I had a suspect fleeing the scene, and gave a description. We ran through the campus, and he climbed a fence leading into the neighborhood. I stopped the pursuit at that point because of my son. An SJPD unit saw the commotion and pulled in behind my car. He and I went into the office and were joined by my guys a short time later. They had a suspect in custody. My guys saw him returning to his car and he matched my description so custody, right? Right! While the SJPD officer talked with the suspect my guys went to the kitchen to look for evidence. They dusted everything and nothing. I walked to one of the freezers and touched it with my index finger. I said, ''dust that."
I took the fingerprint card into the office where the officer was still
talking to the kid. I tossed the card on the desk in front of the kid. He looked up and said, ''I guess you got me."
I said, ''I guess." Note, the kid was waring latex gloves. I guess he forgot.
The officer asked what I wanted to do with the Kid. Booking would take a lot of time so I told him he could have the credit for the arrest.
and use us as witnesses. He asked if I would book the card? I asked why. He said for evidence. I asked why. He said because you found it.
I said yes but it is mine and told him what I did, and He said, ''I'll be!''
Damsels in Distress:
It was about 0230 and I had just finished checking Willow Glen/Markham. I stopped at Curtner to check traffic (it was the witching hour- bars closed - drunks on the road). I heard a knock on the passenger window. There was a woman. She looked frantic. I asked what was wrong and she told me about her girlfriend leaving an abusive husband and spending some time with her. She said that her and some other friends went out for some fun, but the abused woman stayed home. When this one returned, she found the front door ajar.
I got her in the car, notified radio and set out for the house. My fill unit was about 20 minutes away. He asked about the code of response and at this time I told him ''Code 1'' normal but be ready for an update.
When we arrived, I stopped about two doors away. I told her to lock her door and to stay with the car. I drew my duty weapon and went to the door, it was ajar, but no sign of damage. I pushed it open slowly so as not to make any noise. The interior was lit by moonlight through a patio door. There was a living room, dining room, Kitchen, laundry, and the entrance to the garage, all seemed to be in order.
There were stairs leading to the second floor to my left. I went up slowly, pointing my gun ahead of me. At the top I froze in my tracts. Standing about 20 feet away was a man with a gun. I aimed. He aimed, but something was wrong. I looked closer. There was some thing shinny on his left chest. I was looking at myself in a floor to ceiling wall to wall mirror (next stop back to school to check my underwear).
There were four rooms, and one had a door open. I checked the first three and nothing. In the last room I saw a woman lying on the bed. She was covered with a sheet over her right leg and nothing else, NOTHING ELSE. There was no sign of distress. She was breathing softly and regularly, and the room was in good order. I decided not to enter.
I went back to the car and got the lady that had flagged me down. I told her what I had found adding I thought it best If she went into the room. I joined her to make sure she was safe and stood outside the door.
I got a kiss on the cheek for my services and notified radio, ''Code 4'' just as my fill unit pulled up. I told him the whole story (except for the mirror), and heard my second Spanish with a French accent reply. Only this wasn't R G it was Roger Falkowitz God rest his soul. He passed away a few years ago from complications of diabetes and kidney failure.
