More Cop Stuff 3
Born 1941, M, from Santa Clara, CA, United States
PRESIDENT REGAN:
San Jose was a growing city and now could expect visits from important people Reagan was one. He came to town and the city police, FBI, CIA and every other alphabet was at our briefing. Just as an aside, one dumb cop asked the Secret Service agent briefing us what should the cops expect if the president is attacked. The agent said, “get out pf our way because we will shoot you to get to them.”
We filed out to board the bus for transportation to the hotel where the president was to speak. As I got to the hall, I and three others were singled out boy our range master. We were taken to the range, and the sergeant went into the armory. He came out with two sets of binoculars and two bolt action rifles with scopes attached. He handed me one of the rifles. I had never seen it before and never fired it. He told us we were going to be snipers and posted on the roof of a building across the street from the hotel. I was given a call sign something like SJ1 and the other shooter was, you guessed it, SJ2. I was also handed 3 boxes of 5 rounds each 30 ought 6 ammunition.
We were driven to the office building across from the president’s destination. We were met by an office manager and escorted through the building to an elevator. From there we went up to the roof where we left to fend for ourselves. I should tell you we were now fully equipped. We had blue jump suites combat boots bloused of course strap on gas masks the whole nine yards. You should have seen the faces of the workers whose offices we had to walk through.
Once on the roof we logged in with radio “’San Jose 1 south Conner’ and ‘San Jose 2 north corner’ 10-8.’” We loaded five rounds into our rifles. The president’s motorcade was enroot, now we wait.
I remember seeing Dick Reizner (a reserve) working his regular job as a freelance TV cameraman. He did a lot of work for local TV channel 5. There is a side story to this he is the one who invented the news truck. The problem there is he never filed for a Copyright or Patten and now there everywhere and no thanks to him. Anyway, he had this big, and I mean big camera on his shoulder with a long curly cue cord attached to a mouse of a man carrying a big battery pack. Dick would run and the little guy did everything he could to keep up. Dick is gone now he was Jewish, so I guess he is in Jewish heaven??
We were on that roof for four hours in the blazing sun, I can tell you one thing those suites aren’t good for. There was shade but to taking advantage of it meant giving up our view of the area below. The motorcade came and went, nothing happened, and we waited to be relieved.
To this day I wonder if Reagan knew who his snippers were would he have gotten out of his car?
