The Dragon and the Butterfly
Born 1969, F, from London, United Kingdom
Once upon a time, in the magical kingdom of Eldorath, dragons ruled the skies. Their scales glittered like jewels in the sun, their wings stretched wider than the clouds.
But their king, a mighty black dragon named Morvax, had a heart as dark as midnight. He sent his dragons to fight the gentle folk - elves who sang to the moon, fairies who painted flowers, and woodland spirits who kept the rivers laughing.
Far away from the smoke of battle lived a dragon named Caelion. His scales shone green as the spring hills, and his eyes were warm as candlelight. He did not like fighting. He dreamed of a kingdom where dragons and gentle folk could live side by side.
Caelion’s best friend was not a dragon at all, but a butterfly named Lyria. She was small and light as a snowflake, with wings that shimmered in colours too beautiful to name. Wherever she flew, the air filled with the scent of blossoms.
One evening, as the war roared in the distance, Lyria landed softly on Caelion’s nose.
“If we can reach the king,” she said, “maybe we can help him see the goodness he has forgotten.”
So, they began their journey to the Obsidian Spire, where the black dragon sat upon his throne of stone.
They crossed burning valleys where the air tasted of ash. They flew over sleeping forests, where elves peered from the shadows to whisper blessings. Fairies sprinkled silver dust to hide them from the eyes of war.
At last, they entered the great hall. King Morvax’s eyes blazed like storms.
“Caelion,” he thundered, “you dare bring this fluttering scrap of wings before me?”
Caelion bowed low.
“My king, please… the gentle folk wish no harm. The war will leave nothing but sorrow for all of us.”
The king’s laugh was cold.
“Mercy is weakness! And I am the strongest of all!”
Then Lyria drifted forward, her tiny voice clear and bright.
“Your Majesty, true strength is not in destroying, but in protecting. If you choose peace, your name will be remembered forever.”
For a moment, Morvax’s eyes flickered, as if a long-forgotten memory stirred. But his pride roared louder.
Lyria turned to Caelion, her voice soft as a falling petal.
“Then I will show him what peace feels like.”
Before Caelion could stop her, she soared high above the throne. From her wings poured a trail of golden dust, made from her very own magic. The dust wrapped around the king’s head, filling his mind with visions - dragons laughing with fairies, elves riding on gentle dragon backs, flowers blooming across the land.
The dust shone brighter and brighter, until Lyria became nothing but a warm light, and then… she was gone.
King Morvax’s great head bowed. A single tear slid down his dark cheek.
“What… have I done?” he whispered.
That night, the war ended. Dragons and gentle folk came together under a new sky - one of peace.
Caelion often sat on a quiet hill, looking up at the stars. Sometimes, when the wind was just right, he felt the soft brush of butterfly wings against his face, and he knew Lyria was still flying - somewhere beyond the clouds - watching over them all.
Moral: Even the smallest wings can change the world. Kindness is the strongest magic of all. When we choose peace instead of fighting, we make the world brighter for everyone.

08/16/2025This is beautiful. I love how the story blended adventure with a touch of magic while it still centres on kindness, peace and unity. It's so sad that Lyria had to pay with her life to end the war and bring peace to the kingdom. Thank you for sharing!

08/16/2025Lovely story ...more like a parable with the weight of wisdom it carries. And that last; Moral of the story. Priceless.
Congrats on both the Award and the Message.

08/16/2025What a beautiful story! The poor butterfly, Lyria, had to sacrifice herself so that there was peace. I feel that some of us will also have to sacrifice ourselves for peace. Peace is not easily obtained, especially when there are leaders that love war.

09/10/2025Yes, that's true. Since the dawn of existence, peace has always carried the weight of sacrifice. Humanity longs for harmony, yet wherever there is light, the shadow of evil remains. Deep within, we all sense that the peace we seek can not be fully found in this world. For some, it is discovered through faith in Christ, who gave his life to overcome darkness and reconcile us with God. For others, it is the quiet recognition that true and lasting peace must come from something greater than ourselves.

08/15/2025Truly a beautiful example of giving to help others. I think that it is not a coincidence that your story arrived on my screen the same day that peace was denied others across the sea. The more of us who yearn and speak for peace the more likely it may become. It worked before!
