The Truth
Born 1974, M, from Rabat, Morocco
“Until now I can’t understand you, I can’t uncover your real identity, you seem enigmatic, Who are you?”
“I wish I knew the answer, but I don’t, ” he answered with a smile on his face.
“Are you crazy? Mocking at me?” she said in surprise.
“Not at all. Completely sane and aware of what I have said,” he commented in a calm voice.
“Stop your nonsense, please!”
She kept looking at him while he was looking straight as if he were oblivious of the conversation.
“I am on a self-discovery journey, and maybe I won’t reach an answer. Can you tell me who are you?”
“ Sure. I am a 26 year old woman who works as an accountant, has never gotten married, ambitious and serious. It is easy, isn’t it?”
“ You didn’t present yourself, you shared your age which is a biological fact, your job which is an activity you do to earn a living but never defines your identity, marital status which is a choice and you gave two good assets that you should be proud of if they are true.”
“If they are true! I know myself well. “
“ You think you do, but the truth can be different.”
“Why do you always want to complicate things?”
“ I don’t. I just make you face things and see them differently.”
“Why should I do that?”
“To be yourself!”
“Am I not?”
“Maybe you aren’t. You are a mere mortal who has never tried to find the mission one was created for.”
“I do understand what you mean, I am not stupid. But don’t you think you are talking about utopia, something that will never happen.”
“ I am talking about the truth you should look for.”
“Have you found yours?”
“No, I haven’t. I am trying and I have already set off on the journey of self-discovery. But I know one truth!”
“Which one?”
“ I love you! It seemed to be a utopia but it turned into a truth.”

09/03/2025Love this. I think we all try to adhere to the tags of our life. But who are we really. Some don't want to delve to deeply or it might not be pleasant. Your story made me think. Congratulations on Short Story Star of the Day.

09/03/2025Aloha Aziz,
You caught the dilemma we all face, what are we trained to be by our culture, or society, and who are we actually. Loved it! I bet you started a lot of conversations in coffee shops, or over the supper table with this one.
Congratulations on the Award.
Smiles, Kevin

09/03/2025Delighted to read your insightful feedback, sir. Yes, it is a dilemma that has shown a great deal of resistance to enlightenment since it has cemented powerful mental and cultural structures. Certainly, I discuss such a topic with my friends and acquintances and redears when the opportunity occur. My regards

08/30/2025Very clever! Reminds me of some of the existential writers - Camus, Sartre, Hermann Hesse - who emerged after the Second World War. The fact that he genuinely/emphatically loves her is the first step forward on his journey to gain a mix of insight and deep wisdom. This also reminds me of the Arabic (Sufi) tale, Conference of the Birds.
