Just Another Face
I woke up in a graveyard. Why was I here? I don't know the answer nor how I got here. It's dark and I can barely see anything besides the stones in front of me. Glancing up, I see the new moon. It would be just my luck to end up here all alone and without a decent plan of how I was going to get out of here. That was when I felt a chill up my spine and the goosebumps arrived shortly after. I was being watched by something. I looked around and saw nothing.

Why did I bother looking? I can't even see! The darkness cast it's shadows over my eyes like the thickest blanket ever to be made. This is it. This is how I die. Alone. Terrified. And of course, vulnerable. I was screwed. I heard the thundering footsteps approach me and the loud crashing of the underbrush. Here it comes. I felt a sharp, agonizing pain and then nothing. I was dead. Buried in an unmarked grave because no one knew who I was when I was found. No one reported me missing. I remain to this day beneath the cold, unforgiving ground, rotting into nothing more than a fragile skeleton.

Would my case ever be solved? Maybe one day. Until then, my face is on the billboards, social media sites and many more places to advertise my tragic death and pleading people to come forward. It stated that someone knew something or someone had information. I was someone's family member. My name is Jane Doe for now. There are many of us. We're waiting for the justice that we never got alive. Maybe one day we will. Until then, we remain unknown cold cases. Waiting. Just waiting...

This gave me chills. The story is haunting yet so beautifully told. It's powerful, mysterious and emotional.

You've written beautifully about this known (but often overlooked) problem that doesn't seem to have a solution unfortunately. Well done, Odette!

A sad but truthful story. How many unknown victims? This story needed to be told. Congratulations on Short Story Star of the Day.
