Supports She Never Got
Born 2004, M, from Tehran, Iran Islamic Republic Of
To the people who were supportive once,
but now they are seeking support…
Solara has withdrawn to herself for months. She used to be energetic, but circumstances are different at the moment. She does not go out of her house, and nobody knows whether she exists or not. Not only is she like a ghost among the people, but she is also a ghost to her own parents. She tries so hard to make a world that belongs to her and nobody else as a coping mechanism.
In her world, she is a digital minimalist. She is in her bedroom all the time, either reading books or writing her own stories. She does not welcome human contact at all, and she tries her best to avoid them where possible. To other people’s surprise, her own parents have not checked in on her for months because they are busy with their jobs, yet sometimes they are worried of her well-being, and they keep asking themselves “Why is she behaving like this?” But they never find the answer.
What is odd here is that Solara was not always like this. Quite the opposite, she was full of life. she had so many friends that she would hang out with both inside and outside the school. She would reach out to them when they needed her. She used to believe that sympathy and empathy were the very necessary needs of a human being when they were facing an obstacle that they could not overcome by themselves.
For Solara, the well-being of her friends was of utmost importance, and whenever she witnessed a friend did not feel alright, she would go and talk to them. Sometimes she would just sit there and listen to them attentively. She used to argue “all we need is just a friend we can talk to without the imminent signs of being judged by them.” She knew that there were very few people like this, so she tried her best to be one.
She was a comforting companion and a loyal confidante. The one everybody wished that they had. Her way of soothing her friends’ feelings was unlike what was usual. Whenever her friends were facing hardships, and they had not been trusting of the people around them, they would have reached out to her. She would go to them, sit with them, listen to their words and say absolutely nothing. Her friends felt livelier and their face became animated after opening up to her, although Solara did not say a word, she just listened!
One day, it occurs to Solara that she herself is a human-being and she needs someone to open up to when she is feeling blue. But she does not have one, not even her own parents. She contemplates this lack, and it bothers her that she has no one. She thinks of a kind of test that will prove whether her parents, her friends, and her acquaintances will do the same when circumstances are against her or not.
Solara starts with her parents. She says that she is not feeling alright, and she needs to talk to them, but her parents are busy with their jobs, so they do not listen to her words. They think that by listening to their own daughter, they will squander their valuable time when they can use it to get ahead and to make progress in their professions. Her parents think her feelings are inconsequential, and she will feel better over time.
Next is her friends. She calls them and says “I need to talk to you.” Unfortunately, they either undermine her situation or hang up the phone. They ghost her like she does not exist, and it feels like it was yesterday when they needed someone and she was there for them. Most of the times, they say “it’s nothing important. Wait for your tense feelings to subside.” This was not the way she imagined her friends would treat her when she was feeling down.
“What else is there left on the earth to live for when your loved ones are not there for you, just for you?!”
One night, she sits behind her desk and writes a letter. Then she folds and puts it inside an envelope. Then she puts the envelope on her desk. After that she grabs the sleeping pill bottle that her doctor prescribed for her because she has sleeping problems. Then she swallows them all at once and goes to her bed to sleep.
The next day, their servant prepares her breakfast, packs it on the tray and goes to her bedroom. She knocks on the door many times, but receives no answer. At first, she wants to go away, but on second thought, she pulls the handle to open the door. She gets inside and finds Solara lying on her bed. The servant notices the bottle of sleeping pill next to her bed. She calls Solara, but Solara does not respond. At last, the servant goes to her bed and next she is screaming. Upon hearing of the shouting, Solara’s parents go upstairs to her bedroom.
Solara is dead!
Her parents break down. All the people in that room are in shock. They do not know what to do. The servant calls the police and they call the ambulance to take the corpse to the hospital to run some tests in order to find out the real cause of her death.
After that it is her funeral. A lot of people have come to her funeral, especially her friends. It seems that they have time to attend a funeral, but not when an alive person needs them. Everybody is in shock. In fact, her friends feel guilty for not being there for her when she needed them the most. Alas! She is gone and they can do nothing about it.
After the funeral, everybody goes home and carries on like it is not a big deal that a person has just ended her life.
Solara’s mom goes straight to Solara’s bedroom. Solara hated luxury, so she had necessary items which she used most in her bedroom. Her mother goes to Solara’s desk and finds the letter she had written before she committed suicide. Her mom opens it and the letter goes like this:
“To the people of the world.
Please be more caring of your surroundings. There are people around you that need your aid and when they get the courage to ask your help, you refuse to be helpful by bringing some lame excuses like: I’m busy, maybe another time, it’s not important, you’ll figure it out by yourself, etc. They need you when they are alive, and by the time they are dead, your mourning, your sense of guilt, your remorse is useless. They will not bring the dead back.
So be there for them when they are alive and cherish every moment with them.
I’m dead because there was nothing left for me. I had no one to talk to. Not even my parents.
Take people’s feelings very seriously because they are important.”

10/18/2025I'm always extremely sad when I hear stories of people commiting suicide. This permanent solution will not fix problems. We shouldn't give up. Never. Life is worth living. Always. Especially when you are a person that has empathy for others, just like Solara. She had a rare gift of being able to listen without judgement and be there for anyone who needed her.
It might sound strange but if you feel alone and no one seems to have time to listen to you, try talking to chatgpt. I said it might sound strange. Chat won't judge, it's free to use and it might just help a bit. When your mind isn't seeing the joy of living, you need someone or something to just be there.
Strange advice number 2
This might also sound strange but give it a chance.
When the mind is lost, start with the body. Start with the body and the mind will follow. Just get out of bed and do 5 jumping jacks. Then do 5 squats. Then just run in place for 30 seconds. It just takes under 2 minutes to do this and it will help. It will release endorphins which help us feel better.
And 3, listen to music you like. I recommend ARIZONA. It's not a known band (I can't understand why because all of their songs are amazing) but you might just enjoy some of their songs.
I hope something helps you in those bad moments or days or weeks. Always remember that you are here for a reason: to experience all that life has to offer (the good and the not so good).
Thank you for the meaningful story and don't forget to love yourself more, Meraj! You deserve it.

10/15/2025This is a heartbreaking story. But please do not take your own life, no matter the circumstances. Taking your own life can feel like the only way to end the pain, but it also silences the possibility of future light, healing and the chance to find people who will care, listen and hold space for you. I know loneliness is real, but it is not permanent. With time, you would find new people, new places, and new chapters that can offer love and care that may not exist in the present moment. Thank you for sharing!

10/16/2025Thank you for your comment. It's true that over time, we find people with whom we will have best memories. We should deal with the loneliness as a temporary problem, and a temporary problem doesn't need permanent solution.

10/12/2025That was a very sad story about the way in which people can often create a greater trauma for themselves when they focus on what is lacking in their life rather than what they are able to contribute to give their life greater meaning and purpose. Solara seemed a relatively content individual when she was focused on being a caring friend and daughter. But when she instead focused on herself and whether others cared for her in the same way she made herself miserable. Unfortunately this sort of thinking makes many people miserable and leads to a lot of unnecessary suicides. Thank you for sharing this story on Storystar, Meraj. Happy short story star of the week.
