The screaming literally hurt my ears, as I watched with mouth agape as those around him screamed, jumped up and down and flailed their arms in the air.
I looked over at his 2 grand daughters who were screaming as loudly as anybody else and swinging their arms above their heads, I was worried that they would get lost in the melee of people, so I pushed his way through to get nearer to them, I could see the flashing lights and could feel the beat of the music but could not make out any of the words that screamed over the sound system.
I watched his girls, they looked so animated, I had never seen them like this before, he couldn’t help but smile, they totally deserved this enjoyment after all they had been through.
We are in Hyde Park in London for the British Summertime concerts, there had been gigs over the past couple of weekends, but this was the last one with the biggest band and the biggest crowd. We had already been in the crowd for 5 hours watching the earlier acts and eating, while just people watching. Some of the young people wore fantastic outlandish outfits, they were all multi coloured.
Then the sun had gone down and it was time for the main act, the volume was pumped up and running onto the stage were the 8 members of The Lost Boys, they were all Korean, this was a K Pop weekend apparently, the members of the group all had their own specific outfits, which he could now see had been replicated by the crowd dependant on which one was their favourite.
I have lived through various times when different boy bands had had their moment in history, I have seen the films of Beatle Mania, I was a teenager when the hysteria was aimed at the Bay City Rollers and the Osmond’s, I have seen Take That and Boyz Own, but had never experienced this volume and excitement, not even when he had been watching his beloved Tottenham Hotspur.
Times change but every generation have their hero’s and these Korean lads were my granddaughters, their beautiful Mum my daughter had passed away at 32 years of age and her hero’s were Take That, how she cried when they split, but life goes on and I was so happy to share this time with my girls watching them and thinking of Claire!
