IT IS YOUR CHILD
M, from Monrovia, Liberia
Sarah stood frozen, her eyes fixed on the scene unfolding before her. A young mother, frazzled and overwhelmed, was scolding her child in the grocery store. The little boy, no more than four years old, looked up at his mother with tears welling up in his eyes.
Sarah felt a pang of empathy and anger. How could this mother speak to her child so harshly? Didn't she know the damage she was causing?
As Sarah watched, the mother continued to berate the child, her voice growing louder. The little boy's tears spilled over, and he began to sob.
Sarah couldn't take it anymore. She took a step forward, her mouth opening to intervene, but then she hesitated. Who was she to step in? It wasn't her child.
But as she looked into the little boy's eyes, she saw her own son's reflection staring back. She saw her own child's vulnerability and innocence.
Sarah's heart swelled with compassion. She remembered times when she'd lost her patience, when she'd spoken harshly to her own child in frustration.
The mother finally stormed off, leaving the little boy standing alone, sniffling. Sarah's instincts kicked in, and she rushed over to comfort him. "Hey, it's okay, sweetie. You're safe now."
The little boy looked up at her, his eyes red and puffy. "I-I didn't do anything wrong," he whispered.
Sarah's heart broke. "You didn't do anything wrong, baby. Sometimes grown-ups get frustrated, but it's not because of us, okay?"
As she hugged the little boy, Sarah realized that we're all in this together. We're all struggling, parenting, and trying to do our best. She thought about the countless times she'd been judged, criticized, or spoken to harshly. She remembered the pain and the hurt.
In that moment, Sarah made a promise to herself: to be kinder, to offer more understanding, and to show compassion to every parent she met.
As she walked away with the little boy's hand in hers, Sarah knew that she'd never forget this moment. She'd never forget the look in that little boy's eyes, and she'd strive to be part of a community that lifted each other up, rather than tearing each other down.
If you were a child, wouldn't you want someone to show you kindness and compassion?
