IF WE ARE ONE
M, from Monrovia, Liberia
In a small village nestled between two great rivers, years of squabbles had driven people apart. A severe drought had exacerbated the existing tensions, and the scarcity of water had become a pressing issue. But a young girl named Aku believed that together, they could overcome anything. She remembered the old saying: "A river that doesn't join another river has no ending."
Aku's own family had been affected by the dispute between the Kamaras and the Gbellis over a fertile piece of land. Her parents had been friends with both families, but the ongoing feud had made it difficult for them to maintain relationships. Aku's determination to bring the villagers together was personal – she wanted to restore the sense of community and friendship that once existed.
Aku organized community events, and slowly the villagers began to come together. They shared stories, worked together, and discovered that their problems were not so different. As they united, they found a solution to the drought – building a water conservation system that would benefit the entire village.
The Kamaras and Gbellis, seeing the progress and the potential for peace, agreed to meet with Aku's help. Through mediation and compromise, they found a way to share the disputed land, ensuring both families could benefit.
As the villagers stood together, they declared: "If we are one, we can score a goal, defeating hatred and jealousy in our lives. We can fly with one wing over all challenges of life. Togetherness is the foundation upon which the success of friends, family, and colleagues is built. United we stand, forever we rise." And from that day on, the village flourished.
The drought eventually subsided, but the unity and cooperation that Aku had fostered remained, a testament to the power of community and determination.
