SHORT HAND THAT REACHES FAR DISTANCE
Adult, M, from Monrovia, Liberia
Kamawon, a young boy, lived in a small village in the bush with his parents, Gee and Decontee. They were hardworking people who struggled to make ends meet, but they loved Kamawon dearly and did their best to provide for him. Tragically, Gee and Decontee died in a hunting accident when Kamawon was just a child. Kamawon was left alone, and the villagers took him in.
As he grew up, Kamawon's life was marked by hardship and loneliness. He had to fend for himself, hunting and gathering to survive. His friends called him "bush man" and some called him "animal's friend" and other sorts of names. He felt sad because he didn't mean to be known by those names; he wanted to go to school like the other children.
One day, an old man called him and told him a story about "Short Hand that reaches far distance." The old man explained that the short hand was Kamawon, and one day he would reach a long distance where he would touch riches and live a better life.
Kamawon didn't understand the story or how his life would change until one day when he went hunting animals and saw a shining stone in the distance. As he approached it, he realized it was a diamond.
When Kamawon found the diamond, he became so excited and remembered the old man's story. Later, he cried and said, "I wish my parents, Gee and Decontee, were alive." He took the diamond home and told the old man about it. The old man advised him to leave the village and go to the city the next morning.
Kamawon left and moved to the city the next morning. When he got to the city, he sold the diamond and traveled abroad. Two months passed, and he sent for the old man. He also built a school in his village, naming it "Gee-Decontee Memorial School" in honor of his parents.
From that day on, Kamawon began doing countless things for the village, bringing hope and prosperity to the community that had once struggled to care for him.
