Ozone hole in Antarctic is shrinking
Born 1960, F, from San Antonio Texas, United States
The Antarctic Ozone Hole is shrinking:
The Antarctic Ozone hole is steadily shrinking and has shown a clear recovery trend over the past two decades.
The hole in the Ozone layer that went unchecked in the 1970s and 1980s is shrinking. The problem was originally caused by gasses known as chlorofluorocarbons or CFC.
Why does the Ozone layer matter? The Ozone layer is part of the Stratosphere which lie 20 to 60 Kilometers above the surface of the Earth. Ozone is a gas made up of three Oxygen Atoms. This layer is fairly low in our Atmosphere. The ozone layer protects Life on Earth from the Sun’s most harmful Rays. A depletion of Ozone can cause skin Cancer and Vision impairment such as Cataracts.
The Ozone is a simple gas. The Ozone plays a major role in the Earth’s ecosystems. This Ozone protects Life on Earth from the Sun’s Ultraviolet radiation, or UV. Ozone in our stratosphere absorbs almost all this radiation.
Without Ozone the Sun’s intense Rays would sterilize the Earth’s surface.
The shrinking Ozone hole is largely attributed to Montreal and its amendments, which phased out the production of ozone depleting chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons. The Montreal laws and it’s amendments have been successful. Since 1990 when Countries unanimously agreed to regulate 100 Ozone depleting substances, the whole has gotten smaller.
The shrinking of the ozone hole is an example of a global environmental success story, preventing millions of additional cases of skin cancer and cataracts.
International Cooperation:
The Montreal Laws and amendments is a landmark environmental treaty, the United Nations are demonstrating effective global cooperation in solving an environmental crisis.
Progress Indicators:
The general trend shows smaller ozone holes compared to the peak years around the the late 90’s and early 2000s. In 2023, the hole was the Sixth smallest. In 2025, it was the smallest in Six years.
Natural Variability:
Colder conditions in the stratosphere can lead to a larger hole, while warmer temperatures tend to result in a smaller one. But I myself wonder how warmer temperatures effect the Glaciers and Ice formations. Do the warmer temps cause melt off that may not be recoverable.
Projected Full Recovery:
Scientists from NASA project the Antarctic ozone layer will recover by 2056, with recovery in other parts of the world expected sooner.
Continued Monitoring:
Experts emphasize the need for continued monitoring and adherence to the international agreements to ensure the trend continues.
International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated on September 16th each Year.
Although Fossil Fuel power plants account for 15 percent of exposure to Particle pollution in the Ozone there is evidence of recovery.
My only fear is that the United States is not actively engaging in this prevention methods.
Some from the United States say Climate change is a myth.
I have read that some Politicians are demanding to up the Coal productions for America.
Is destroying the Land, causing Lung Cancer for the Coal Minors and destroying the Atmosphere worth the cost to put money into Pockets of the already Rich?

12/09/2025Thank you Kankana. My Daughter shared this good news. I have written several stories on the loss of glaciers and Sea Ice. But I do want to share good news.
