Good vs Evil---The Election (Part 2)
As readers will recall, Good and Evil had made a bet on a mayoral election in a small Midwestern American town to prove or disprove Evil’s contention that people were inheritently greedy, selfish and bad. Evil’s candidate was a young bearded town council member who promised everything without cost; for example, free health care from the town’s one doctor, free dental care from its one dentist, free haircuts from its one barber and free movies from its one theater. Good’s candidate was a mother turned activist when the town school began to teach sex education to pre-schoolers. She promised to reorganize the school, fix the town’s long neglected roads and improve its fire department but this might require some new taxes.
As these two candidates also represented the two sides of the country’s political divide the election drew national attention. The turnout was large and the vote counting slow. Then something unexpected happened---a tornado, something that had never hit the town before ,came out of nowhere and totally destroyed the city hall where the votes were being counted. Consternation ensued. Each party brought suit against the other one. The national guard was called out. In the end, the town’s people decided that enough was enough, they didn’t want to be the focus of national attention any more. The town’s last mayor was re-appointed for another term and in a short time the election was forgotten and the town went back to its sleepy ways.
Meanwhile, Evil was once again visiting Good in his airy mountaintop home and they sat out on the patio drinking Good’s specially brewed coffee. “That was a dirty trick,” said Evil.
“What do you mean?” said Good.
“Sending that tornado when you knew my candidate would win the election in a landslide.”
“I didn’t send any tornado,” said Good, looking his most innocent. “Don’t forget that I’m Good and would never do something like that. Actually, I thought you’d sent the tornado. That’s something Evil would do.”
Evil laughed. “You’re right, it is something I’d do but not when my candidate was sure to win and I’d win my bet.”
“Your candidate was not sure to win but I suppose we’ll never really know. Enjoy the view.”
“I suppose you’re right. It is a nice view.”
But Evil was already in his mind hatching up his next scheme. Good suspected this was so and was planning his counter-scheme. Meanwhile, they enjoyed their coffee as they watched the sun go down.
